SUMMARY
Senior Designer is responsible for Pearson Learning Services K-12 Product Design from print to digital. S/he may lead concept creation to daily creative production needs to arrive at the best design solution within budget and timeline. S/he may work with a Design Leads, Illustrators, Multimedia Designers, UX Designers, cross-functional teams and vendors under Design Manager’s direction. Deliverables may include design prototypes (print and digital/apps), design specification, and any product design related deliverables as assigned.
S/he will lead and evangelize the best practices of Product Design and Experience among all cross-functional team. S/he would mentor and manage vendor design partners as necessary.
Responsibilities:
•Help define the product experience of Pearson programs from print to digital.
•Lead and engage with cross-functional teams such as editors, product managers, developers and other stakeholders in design explorations and product feature definitions.
•Work with Editorial and Product Management teams to assimilate complex, and sometimes ambiguous, ideas and propose elegant design solutions that solve problems.
•Incorporate site analytics and feedback and apply them intelligently into iterative design solutions that optimize existing features and functionality. Create engaging visual design that embodies the site strategies, user goals and enhances learning and teaching appeal.
•Evangelize the product design and experience across the company.
•Mentor staff and freelance designers.
•Under direction of the Design Manager, the Designer II may take a Lead role on a project, to supervise others in the creative development
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Prototyping 30%
•Collaborates and brainstorms with Design Manager or Design Lead, marketing and editorial departments to create prototypes for multi-platfrom (print to digital) and come up with visual and design solutions.
•Addresses and presents customization information in all presentations of prototypes as directed by Design Manager or Design Lead.
•Prepares the prototypes for focus testing.
•Prepares final prototypes presentation to upper management.
•Maintains the integrity of the design through the various design passes.
Layout/Storyboards 20%
•Reviews manuscript with editor to see if there are opportunities to present the information visually.
•Addresses and presents customization solutions as part of all program development, as directed by Design Manager.
•Collaborates with art buyers and photo researchers in the stylistic direction of art and photos. Creates art guidelines.
•Designs individual chapters based on the look and feel established in the prototypes. Ensures the design elements are consistently treated throughout the chapters.
•Monitors costs and adheres to company-wide efficiencies to stay within program budget.
Style Guides/Design Specification 20%
•Works with UX and Interactive Media teams to create digital style guides.
Product Branding 20%
•With guidance from Designer II, collaborates with Art and/or Photo departments as needed to select images for cover design.
•Receives editorial feedback on the cover design (e.g. appropriateness of image to the book content, correct book title, etc.)
•Prepares the cover designs for focus testing, if needed, and for the internal stakeholder feedback (e.g. marketing, sales)
Technical Responsibilities 10%
•Makes sure that the file organization structure on the internal server complies with department’s file management guidelines
•Posts files to project folders in FTP and internal server following established protocols.
•Creates technically clean usable art files in compliance with the department’s pre-flighting checklist including files built to meet requirements for digital usage.
•Provide CSS and provide design walk-thrus to development teams
•Participate agile process
•Demonstrated ability to build simple to moderately complex designs including extensive Photoshop manipulation.
•Stays technically current on all applications used to create designs as well as stays current on all print-ready and digital-ready
Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Skills/knowledge/abilities
•3+ years of experience as a Designer required, preferably in a publishing environment.
•Experience and evidence of visual design experience and website usability best practices, rapid prototyping and working the design from the big picture to the last details.
•Preferably hold a degree in graphic design, user interface design, interactive media design, visual design, etc. and has a solid body of work from the real world.
•Embody the work ethic and personality that thrives in a fast-paced culture with tight deadlines, shifting priorities, and working with super-smart colleagues from numerous departments and locations.
•Advanced knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat; Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and FileMaker; Thorough understanding of print and file management (e.g. server, FTP); Familiarity with InDesign/InCopy workflow, Knowledge of responsive design, application product design, HTML, Sketch, Axure, InVision and other digital design tools is a plus.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Ability to collaborate with other groups in a team environment (e.g. Marketing, Editorial, Customization); Ability to self-manage and work independently; Detail-oriented with creative skills; Knowledge of design and typography.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
•A BFA from an accredited four-year college specializing in graphic design/fine art, human centered design, or graduate of an art school or equivalent design work experience.
