The Communications and Media Relations Department (part of WGBH’s Marketing and Communications division) is responsible for all local and institutional media relations, constituent communications, publications (including the monthly Explore! member program guide), and curating and programming our digital mural. The department is responsible for the creation of a variety of communications materials (print, web, electronic), providing in-house editorial services (writing, copyediting, proofing), and media outreach to promote WGBH to its many constituents including local viewers and listeners, online audiences, members, donors, Board leadership, community leaders, press and the general public.
Position Overview
The Assistant Director of Media Relations plans and executes strategic communications efforts to gain positive awareness for WGBH, its programs, brands, and people. This position has major responsibility for promoting the daily work of WGBH News.
Duties include proactive outreach to press, thought leaders and community influencers; use of both traditional and emerging public relations and social media approaches; original writing and editing; promotion of institutional priorities, including education initiatives, membership marketing, and community outreach and events; identifying media opportunities and public appearances for WGBH leadership and news personalities.
Essential Functions:
60% Work directly with members of the media, proactively pitching stories and other coverage of WGBH programs and events, and responding to media inquiries;
15% Strategize and execute outreach to thought leaders and community influencers promoting WGBH institutional priorities, using both traditional and emerging public relations and social media approaches;
15% Consult with internal stakeholders to develop public relations strategy for promoting programs and initiatives;
10% Perform original writing and editing of press releases, a WGBH Member Magazine column, and other related editorial work.
Skills Required
Five to ten years of professional communications, public relations or journalism experience. Expert writing, editing and communication skills. Comprehensive, professional knowledge of traditional and emerging public relations and social media tools. Ability to pitch reporters on a wide array of stories. Experience building and managing relationships with key media and community influencers. Demonstrated experience developing and executing strategic outreach plans. Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently. Ability to thrive in high-energy, deadline-driven setting. Must have interest in current events, particularly local news; familiarity with Boston and New England media a plus.
Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree a plus. Specialization in journalism, communications, marketing, political science or professional experience in related field strongly preferred.
