Senior Art Director - Penguin Workshop
Lead the art and design team at an energetic and creative workshop that acquires and creates the very best
Senior Art Director for Penguin Workshop will oversee a design staff of 8, through the development of approximately 175 books a year, across 3 seasonal publishing lists. Maintain the creative vision on innovative lead titles for Penguin Workshop, best-selling brands Mad Libs and Who HQ, and licensed publishing programs. This design leader will work across a broad range of formats including: board, picture books, chapter books, readers, activity, and middle-grade fiction. Senior Art Director will join the senior management team at Penguin Workshop and lead a staff of senior designers, designers, and design assistants, as well as work closely with freelance illustrators and agents. This key role will work in partnership with Editorial Director and Executive Managing Editor to evaluate and maintain effectual workflows, and work with Publisher and Associate Publisher on imprint branding initiatives.
Requirements:
• 5 years proven art and design management experience
• Sharp communication and presentation skills
• Excellent people-management skills
• Superior design sensibilities across multiple book formats
• Ability to work collaboratively and cross-departmentally
• An appreciation of all kinds of books and all kinds of readers
Responsibilities:
• Manage a design staff of 8
• Overall project management for current projects and schedules
• Work collaboratively with Editorial Director and Executive Managing Editor
• Work with Publisher and Associate Publisher on key lead titles, design and creative strategy,
and imprint branding initiatives
• Hire freelance illustrators
• Manage illustrators, illustration reps, and creative studios
• Budget yearly design department operating expenses
• Communicate with Marketing, Publicity, Sales, and key groups within Penguin Young Readers
• Design presentation materials, pitches, and launch decks
• Attend cover meetings
