Designer, HMH Books for Young Readers
The Designer reports to the Art Director of HMH Books for Young Readers. He or she is responsible for following through on the creative vision and design of our Young Readers book covers and interiors. The Designer sees each assignment through the design process, from conception to approval to delivery of final files to production.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Executes a broad range of designs appropriate for children’s books, with a primary focus on fresh commercial cover designs for YA and middle grade fiction.
• Creates designs for young adult and middle grade fiction, picture books, and nonfiction titles that are appropriate for both physical and digital versions of the book and which can translate into multiple formats.
• Works closely with illustrators and photographers in the creation and delivery of cover and interior artwork.
• Work closely with the Art Director to schedule and prepare materials for jacket meetings, as well as for Sales and Marketing meetings.
• Works closely with editorial, managing editorial, and production.
• Ensures proper management of digital assets, following procedures for online use and in HMH archive.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in art/design
• 3-5 years’ experience designing children’s books or additional relevant experience
• Expert knowledge of typography, illustration, and photography
• Expertise in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
• Ability to take direction yet maintain intuition
• Thorough understanding of print and digital design trends
• Solid print production experience, including creating print-ready files; additional digital production experience preferred
• Excellent oral and written communication skills

Physical Requirements:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing)
• The person in this position needs to move about inside office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings
