Editorial Assistant or Assistant Editor - Viking
The Viking Editorial department is seeking an Editorial Assistant or an Assistant Editor to join their team. Working with serious nonfiction titles, this role will provide administrative and editorial support to the Vice President, Associate Publisher and will act as a liaison between authors, agents, and various internal departments. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the entire publishing process!
Specific responsibilities include:
1. Evaluating manuscripts as directed by supervisor, logging submissions, writing and sending out rejection letters, and drafting reader reports.
2. Overseeing the entire production process from finished manuscript to bound book by working with authors and the managing editorial department.
3. Creating art logs for illustrations, researching text, and tracking permissions.
4. Generating all imprint paperwork and descriptive copy, including contract requests, TI sheets, catalog copy, flap copy, etc.
5. Providing general administrative support, including answering phones, taking messages, filing expense reports, scheduling travel, photocopying, routing author payments, maintaining hard copy and electronic files, tracking project due dates, executing mailings, and fielding questions from authors.

• Minimum of 1 year of editorial work experience to be considered at the Assistant Editor level
• Prior office experience within book publishing a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and follow up skills
• Ability to complete tasks on deadline and work creatively with others
• Proven ability to take initiative and problem solve creatively
• Ability to work well independently and within a team
• Proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
