Editorial Assistant – Doubleday
The Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group is looking for an Editorial Assistant to join our Doubleday imprint, supporting the Vice President & Executive Editor. The Editorial Assistant will provide general administrative and editorial support while learning about the overall editorial process and the inner workings of a publishing office.
Doubleday publish an array of commercial fiction, literary fiction and serious nonfiction titles. Among the bestselling and prize-winning authors published by Doubleday are Dan Brown, Bill Bryson, John Grisham, Anne Applebaum, Mark Haddon, Colson Whitehead and Margaret Atwood.
The Editorial Assistant:
• Schedules meetings, jacket meetings and tracks schedule/commitments and content for approval for imprint-wide titles (including jacket covers, flap copy, bound galley copy, catalog copy, etc.).
• Provides general administrative support to supervisor (answers phones, takes messages, photocopies, files, assists with Vice President & Executive Editor’s schedules and tracks project due dates, fields questions from authors and agents, keeps online records and data feeds up to date, tracks advance payments and contracts, etc.).
• Works with authors, publishers, agents, and the managing editorial department to coordinate and keep track of production process from finished manuscript to bound book.
• Evaluates manuscripts in whole or in part as dictated by supervisor, writes reader’s reports, and drafts rejection letters.
• Provides needed content and assistance to marketing, publicity, rights, and sales departments especially in drafting catalog and flap copy, tip sheets, reader’s guides, and other material for in- and out-of-house promotional use.
Requirements:
• Prior office experience
• Interest in and enthusiasm for book publishing industry
• Excellent organizational skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to think analytically
• Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects
• Excellent attention to detail and follow-up skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word & Excel
• A keen liking and large capacity for reading
