DIGITAL PLANNER
The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com is seeking a dynamic, highly-motivated digital planner and manager for its features/entertainment center.
The successful candidate will be a strong collaborator, effective communicator and an enthusiastic coach who can work closely with reporters, producers and newsroom leadership. As the department’s lead digital expert, this individual will be expected to have a strong understanding of audience metrics, SEO and social optimization with the goal of growing audience.
This ideal candidate will lead by example. He or she will demonstrate strong news judgment and encourage innovation and excellence from his/her reporters and producers. The successful applicant should have prior digital news or story packaging experience, and will specialize in finding a wide audience for the department’s stories, photos, video, graphics and other content.
Most importantly, the ideal candidate will be an innovator who is passionate about entertainment news, digital growth and our mission. He or she will help chart the course for the center.
Daily job responsibilities:
• Uses news judgment to select and program content by platform: digital, mobile, social and print.
• Determines what content should be prioritized for mobile, social and desktop.
• Manages overall digital strategy for department, including coverage of major arts and entertainment events and festivals.
• Supervises reporters covering key arts and entertainment topics; Works individually with each to identify areas of improvement, elevate their work and write stories for key audience groups. Enforces deadlines.
• Uses strong news judgment and SEO insight in editing, headline writing and production of content.
• Works in concert with the department director, audience analyst and the consumer experience director to create high quality content that best serves audience needs.
• Aggressively monitors metrics and directs production team to make needed changes based on the data.
Requirements:
• Strong writing and editing skills.
• Experience working with mobile, social and digital platforms for a daily news organization.
• Ability to act calmly, decisively and with urgency in breaking news situations
• Knowledge of AP style
• At least 5-7 years’ experience, including some supervisory work.
• Photoshop or other image-editing skills
• Video production/editing skills
