USA TODAY NETWORK is one of the top 20 digital companies in the country, sharing the list with Google, Facebook, and Amazon. And we have over 100 million unique visitors a month, which is more than Buzzfeed, Yahoo News, and Huffington Post. Because our team consists of over 110 local properties with USA TODAY at the helm, you’ll have the luxury of living in a community you love while making a national impact.
The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com is looking for a strategic leader to own coverage of politics and key national issues. In this job, you would direct a team of reporters to develop exclusive content, to respond instantly to breaking news and to analyze developments for our audience in Arizona and across the USA TODAY Network.
Reporters on the team focus on Arizona’s delegation in Congress, the issues before them, and their campaigns and challengers; immigration and border issues; diversity, demographics and social disparity; and health care.
These issues and Arizona’s delegation live in the national spotlight, and your team must develop content that is complete, authoritative, interesting and shareable.
You would work to get our content to the broadest audience across all platforms, telling stories in text, in video, through data-driven graphics or in a combination of all three.
A key goal is focusing our coverage to grow audience among those whom we may not regularly reach.
Strong leadership is a must as you guide journalists by consultation and coaching before, during and after the creation of content. You must be a collaborator in the newsroom, working effectively with visual journalists, digital producers and social planners to maximize the impact of that content.
Deep knowledge of the political system and other national issues is essential. As a news strategist, you must be able to identify angles that could be catalysts for exclusive content and watchdog coverage.
You will use metrics to understand what’s resonating with readers and will shape coverage to steadily increase audience. Duties include writing compelling headlines and employing SEO best practices to draw in readers.
You must connect with the community through outreach (social media, on camera, forums and community leadership), promote your personal brand and the brands of colleagues, as well as the institutional brand. You must work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment and always demonstrate an awareness of and adherence to the highest journalistic ethical standards.
Previous experience as a content editor preferred.
