Job Description
Graphics Editor, Washington The Wall Street Journal is looking for an enthusiastic journalist to work with its economics team in Washington as a data visualization specialist and developer.
You would dig into numbers to produce enterprising and engaging visual stories, thinking always about how to connect with our audiences in innovative ways.
This is a graphics reporting position with room for developing your own areas of focus in the U.S. and global economies.
We want an omnivorous mind with a talent for transforming complex subjects into simple yet striking visuals. You would work on your own projects and jointly with other reporters, pursuing quick hits and more involved analysis.
We want you to think first for mobile screens, but versions of your work may ultimately appear across all WSJ platforms.
Your colleagues in the economics team—more than a dozen of us—would also rely on you for advice and counsel on best practices for data analysis, visualization and digital storytelling.
You will literally sit right in the middle of our coverage and work with us from planning to publication.
Qualifications:
You’re a developer with substantial skill and experience working with data (SQL, Python and/or R are a plus) and HTML/CSS and JavaScript (particularly D3) to visualize it.
We expect you would both pitch and execute ideas, including writing engaging text to complement your visual stories.
You’ll often work as part of a team, drawing on the Journal’s journalists worldwide.
Prior experience working in a newsroom with excellent news, storytelling and design judgment are required, as is the ability to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
