SUMMARY
Assists in all phases of a project with primary emphasis on vendor oversight of the development of print and digital curriculum. Provides constructive feedback when needed to vendors. Formulates solutions to schedule and quality problems. Prepares accurate status reports on a regular basis. May also include the development of curriculum - the writing and editing of manuscripts for print and digital student and teacher-facing materials. With supervision, coordinates with Design, Production, and other departments from manuscript stage to print bound books or digital “go live” of courses.

The Editor knows the subject matter for his/her assigned area and uses that knowledge to develop competitive offerings. The Editor is knowledgeable about all of the “details” in the plan for the assigned project, including specs, writing guidelines, and the plan details for RFPs (if appropriate). The Editor relies on guidance from his/her direct supervisor to ensure that the evolving product meets the objectives of the plan, its budget, and its schedule.
Supervisory responsibilities (direct and indirect)
Supervisory responsibilities at this level is limited to oversight of vendors.
Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE (Knowledge and experience necessary to do job)
Related work experience
• Minimum 3 years editorial experience working at an educational publisher/vendor in the area of science.
• Minimum 3 years experience in science curriculum development or the development of instructional materials.
• Science teaching experience preferred.
• Must be knowledgeable regarding educational methodologies and instructional design.
• Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards as well as the state standards adoption process preferred.
Formal education or equivalent
• A BA/BS in science (life, earth or physical) is required.
• Teacher certification preferred.
Skills
• Proficient user of computers and software programs including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.
• Understands instructional design of digital instructional assets and has experience in developing assets that meet content load and grade level requirements.
• Understands the textbook production process.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Works well in a team setting.
• Must be able to respond quickly in an environment of changing priorities. Must be able to set relevant priorities on a daily basis and meet deadlines.
• Must be consistently dependable in completing assigned tasks on time with the required level of quality.
• Must be able to utilize constructive feedback to refine skills and reduce mistakes.
• Must display a “customer focus” in working with teams to conceptualize marketable product.
• Must be strategic and efficient in planning and executing to ensure consistent on-time delivery of product.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (List in order of importance, and list amount of time spent on task)
• With supervision, write and edit print and digital curriculum.
• Monitor appropriateness of curricular material as to reading level, content accuracy and currency, freedom of bias, and teachability.
• Write and provide art specs for artists and photo-researchers. Participate in evaluation of sketches and choice of photos.
• Working with Product Management and Marketing, analyze competition and market trends and incorporate findings into program.
• Oversee work of in-house associate editors, freelancers, and outside developers.
• Ensure compliance with national and state standards and assessments.
• Participate, as appropriate, in market research efforts (e.g. prepare sample lessons, conduct phone interviews, attend focus groups, etc.)
• Participate in planning assigned projects; make creative suggestions that reflect an understanding of the market place and an awareness of customer needs.
• Ensure that product responds to customer needs.
