Overview
The VP of Marketing oversees all marketing and publicity efforts for the W Publishing Group, which prides itself on strong author relationships, award-winning content, and a cohesive team environment. W Publishing’s successes include current New York Times bestsellers Capital Gaines by Chip Gaines as well as past mega-sellers The Magnolia Story, Heaven is For Real, and Same Kind of Different as Me.
Our ideal candidate is a marketing innovator who is experienced in strategic planning, has impeccable business instincts, and possesses strong leadership skills and the desire to manage and grow a top-notch team. The VP of marketing works closely with the publisher and associate publisher to shape both short and long-term market strategy for the imprint. Day-to-day responsibilities include management of a team of marketing and publicity professionals, including Marketing and PR Directors, plan creation and execution for 25-30 frontlist titles a year, and shared leadership of the publishing and business process. We work in a dynamic and highly collaborative environment, and the VP of marketing will interact daily with authors and agents and collaborate closely with the W Publishing editorial and sales teams. An extensive background in strategic planning and brand management is a must.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Foster an environment of creativity, passion, and innovation through extensive market knowledge and strategic planning skills.
• Collaborate with sales leaders and with retailers to create highly customized marketing strategies that optimize individual title performance and build author brands over the long term.
• Partner effectively and communicate persuasively with authors, author teams, agents, and brand partners.
• Engage in executive planning with other senior leaders to best position W Publishing and HCCP for future success.
• Build and extend marketing platform assets (list-building, brand partnerships, consumer research).
• Create and manage master marketing budget and allocation of funds for individual projects.
• Function as a player in the effort to meet or exceed annual revenue for both imprint and HarperCollins corporately.
• Leads a world-class marketing and publicity team and successfully mentors individual team members to optimal success.
Qualifications
Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Publicity, or related field is required.
Master’s degree preferred.
Industry Knowledge:
Extensive experience (7-10+ years) in multiple phases of marketing and publicity, including promotion, merchandising, packaging, and master strategy in a creative industry.
Expertise in brand management and strategic planning essential.
Work Experience:
Minimum 7 years in publishing with 2 or more years in a leadership role preferred;
Target of 7-10 years in publishing with 3 or more years in a leadership role preferred.
