The Gannett Design Studio, Louisville, KY a member of the USA Today Network - is hiring a part-time remote designer/page editor to join a team of dedicated, passionate visual journalists.
Design Studio designers and editors create visual concepts to communicate ideas that inform and captivate readers for 15 newspapers across five states from Vermont to Maryland.
Design Studio designers are journalists who love to tell stories visually. Ideal candidates should have experience in at least one of the following disciplines: illustration, graphic design or editorial design/layout. Successful Design Studio designers also understand how to use color, display typography, grids, photo illustration and breakout information to create compelling pages. Conceptual visual storytelling and news judgment are important as we illustrate many of the stories we design.
Working in the studio, you'll have the opportunity to build a diverse portfolio and get the depth of experience that could take you a lifetime to develop elsewhere. You will be able to work on any of the 15 papers that the studio serves.
Candidates should have daily or weekly newspaper experience, which may include time spent at a student publication. Experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop is recommended. Experience using a content management system such as CCI NewsGate is also a plus.
In this role, you will:
• Design compelling newspaper and magazine covers and pages.
• Illustrate and design high-level, conceptual enterprise and investigative centerpieces.
• Design premium special sections.
• Develop branding for special projects.
• Create graphics for digital publication.
• Work collaboratively with remote editors and producers.
• Adhere to legal, ethical and quality standards.
Here's what you need:
• Experience designing covers and inside pages for a print publication, which may include time at a student publication.
• Ability to work quickly in a competitive, deadline-oriented environment.
• General understanding of newspaper workflows and processes.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to work on multiple tasks during a shift.
• Personal transportation, a valid driver's license and successful completion of a drug screening and background check.
What would be a plus?
• Ability to create original illustrations or graphic designs.
• Experience creating infographics.
• Expertise with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign.
• Experience working with a content management system such as CCI NewsGate.
• Digital design experience.
• Copy or wire editing experience.
• Previous employment in a studio environment working for several publications.
• Five or more years of publication design experience.
• Experience working in a corporate environment.
