Associate Editor, CityLab.com
CityLab, The Atlantic’s sister site devoted to the most pressing issues and innovative ideas shaping cities and neighborhoods, is looking for an exceptional editor. This editor will have a dual role: He or she will be part of our news editing team, but will also be responsible for building out our new "POV" initiative. The growing “POV” section features guest opinion content from established urban thinkers as well as new, emerging regional voices and thought leaders. The editor will be part of a collaborative and scrappy team working to expand the reach and breadth of CityLab’s work.
Responsibilities Include:
• Manage the workflow from pitch to publication of staff and freelance contributors, including daily production and medium-term projects
• Help conceive and execute daily coverage on a broad array of topics related to urban issues, with a particular emphasis on the site’s Equity channel
• Aggressively recruit POV contributors and work with those contributors to produce opinion content for the site
• Work with CityLab’s editors to contribute to overall site management
Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:
• Excellent writer and editor with a passion for the future of journalism and experimenting in the digital world
• At least five years of experience as a journalist or an equivalent related position, and one as an editor
• Tons of ideas and the ability to execute them creatively
• Superb management and interpersonal skills
You'll Get Noticed If You Have:
• Enthusiasm and ideas for finding and cultivating the next great voices and thought leaders
• Experience working with opinion content, either as a writer or editor
• A track record of turning great story ideas and reporting into sharp and clearly defined copy
• An aptitude for finding the best medium for a story, whether it be text, illustration, or map
• A sensibility and vision for how to make stories about cities resonate for a broad national and international audience
• Particular interest or expertise in cities generally or particular CityLab beats
CityLab has offices in Washington, D.C. and New York, but candidates in other locations will be considered. Please submit a résumé, cover letter, and three clips to your digital editing work. You may also include additional clips of your written work.
Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in its candidates. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions.
Force of Intellect - Atlantic Media seeks a discipline and rigor of thought as manifested, often, in exceptional academic performance and, later, success in a professional environment.
Spirit of Generosity - Equally, Atlantic Media seeks what we term a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition towards service and selfless conduct.
Atlantic Media is an EOE of Minorities/Women/Vets/Disability.
