Senior Acquisitions Editor, Zondervan Trade
Overview
The Zondervan Trade Books Team seeks to discover, develop, and publish Christian content for readers in search of real faith for a real world. We work with a broad range of authors, including Rick Warren, Ann Voskamp, Henry Cloud & John Townsend, Shauna Niequist, Lee Strobel, and Christine Caine. We are looking for a Senior Acquisitions Editor who will become a vital part our team and bring life-changing content into our program.
Zondervan is a leading competitor in book publishing and the primary responsibility of the senior editor is for the acquisition, editorial and product development of Christian nonfiction trade books, as well as ongoing management of those books. The senior editor must work in a team environment with excellence, leadership, creativity, and perseverance to help us fulfill the goals of a mission driven publisher.
Responsibilities
• Maintain a consistent and diversified publishing pipeline, in accordance with the Publisher and publishing team strategy and philosophy.
• Proactively participate in weekly editorial meetings and pub boards
• Identify and leverage market opportunities
• Actively acquire new titles and authors—consistent with publishing strategy and financial goals
• Maintain and strengthen trust in author relationships. Provide timely communication with current and potential authors and their agents regarding the status of their proposals and/or future projects and backlist titles. Lead author meetings.
• Negotiate with authors and/or agents within financial benchmarks.
• Personally conduct editorial development and macro edits of books acquired.
• Present titles at sales conference.
• Build and grow a working knowledge of departmental mission and financial goals.
• Attend conferences and industry trade shows as needed to access authors, agents and potential projects.
• Participate in creative development of titles, descriptive copy and covers for books acquired
• Work with cross-functional partners including marketing and publicity, production editors, freelance editors, sales, and finance.
• Help develop and approve back ad/flap copy, catalog and promotional copy
Qualifications
Work Experience:
Proven success as an acquisitions editor, macro editor, and 7-8 years’ experience in publishing
Education:
English, Journalism, or Theological or equivalent degree required.
Industry Knowledge:
Knowledge of the ABA and CBA trade book market, leading authors, and publishers is required.
