How the role fits in and the purpose:
BMC Medicine is an open access, open peer-reviewed general medical journal publishing outstanding and influential research in all areas of clinical practice, translational medicine, medical and health advances, public health, global health, policy, and general topics of interest to the biomedical and sociomedical research and professional communities. As the flagship medical journal of the BMC series and one of the top 10 general medical journals (JCR, 2016), we also publish stimulating debates and reviews as well as unique forum articles and concise tutorials. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the editorial mission of BMC Medicine, working as part of a dynamic team of editors who assess manuscripts, commission content, participate in special initiatives and programs, and travel internationally to promote the journal and its content.
Job Duties
For both Assistant and Associate Editor levels:
• Assessing manuscripts for advance, interest level and scientific content
• Identifying peer reviewers and managing the peer review process
• Developing expertise in one or more health or medical area within the journal’s scope
• Commissioning and editing content such as Mini Reviews, Commentaries, and Opinions
• Contributing to the journal’s development as well as to special initiatives and educational/ thought leadership programs and materials
• Promotion of the journal via social media and suggesting articles for press releases and marketing
• Attend relevant conferences and events and report to the editorial team on key learnings, new areas of research, policy, or practice
• Other duties as required by manager
Additional responsibilities for the Associate Editor level:
• Contributing to journal strategy and policies
• Helping to monitor journal performance
• Project management of special issues and thematic series
• Project management of special initiatives and educational/thought leaderships programs and materials
• Representing the journal at national and international conferences and institute visits
• Representing the journal in meet-the-editor sessions.
Job Requirements
For both the Assistant and Associate Editor levels:
• An MD or PhD, or equivalent in a relevant subject area
• Broad scientific interests in areas relevant to the journal
• Excellent written communication skills
• Confident verbal communicator (by phone, in person, in groups)
• Awareness of the implications of published literature on future research, policy, and practice, and ultimately on people’s health and lives – as one of the core values that inspires the candidate’s editorial work
• Good attention to detail
• Strong organizational and time-management skills
• Commitment to research integrity, innovation, sound publication processes, and research quality
• Target-oriented
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment
• Open-minded
• Enthusiastic and collegial team player
• Willing to travel internationally to represent the journal at conferences, institute visits and other venues
For the Associate Editor level:
• Previous editorial experience
• Awareness of current challenges and opportunities in scientific publishing
• In depth knowledge of relevant scientific areas
• Experience with mentoring junior members of the editorial team (desirable)
• Experience with functioning as a liaison with different institutions and organizations, and establishing or managing project-specific partnerships (desirable)
• Some experience with the development of educational initiatives, programs, and materials that may support the Journal’s visibility and leadership on medical and health areas is desirable but not required
