Editorial Assistant – Ballantine, Random House Publishing Group
Summary
The Ballantine imprint of the Random House Publishing Group is seeking an Editorial Assistant.
This position will be supporting two executive editors focused primarily on commercial fiction and narrative nonfiction, including several NYT bestselling franchise authors such as Debbie Macomber and Dean Koontz. Responsibilities will include creating TI sheets, transmitting manuscripts to production, interfacing with authors, agents, and other departments in providing necessary information and materials related to all aspects of the publishing process, reading and offering feedback on submissions as well as contracted books.
Candidates should be detail-oriented, highly organized, interested the publishing process as a whole, and able to manage myriad administrative tasks and other priorities.
Responsibilities
• Provides general administrative and scheduling support to supervisor.
• Tracks project due dates, fields questions from authors and agents, keeps online records and data feeds up to date, tracks advance payments and contracts, etc.
• Works with authors, publishers, agents, and the managing editorial department to coordinate and keep track of production process from finished manuscript to bound book.
• Evaluates manuscripts in whole or in part as dictated by supervisor, writes reader’s reports, and drafts rejection letters.
• Provides needed content and assistance to marketing, publicity, rights, and sales departments especially in drafting catalog copy, tip sheets, reader’s guides, and other material for in- and out-of-house promotional use.
Requirements
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize in a high volume environment
• Meticulous attention to detail
• Ability to work effectively with a broad range of people, in-house and out of house; throughout the publishing community
• A passion for fiction and non-fiction
• Some prior knowledge of the publishing process, and/or office experience is strongly preferred, but not essential
• Ability to multi-task and manage competing deadlines
• Strong and efficient communication skills, both verbal & written
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
• Proficient using Microsoft Office tools (Outlook/Word/Excel) and other company used applications
Salary for this position is $38,000. Full-time employees are eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.
