PLEASE NOTE: This is a temporary, project opportunity. The term of the project is anticipated to last approximately six months. This contingent position is paid by a third party payrolling vendor while the Consultant is providing services for HMH to HMH clients.
Overall Responsibility:
Math Solutions is seeking an energetic, organized, detail-oriented individual to provide overall support in the development and workflow of all titles in a busy publications department.
Primary Accountabilities:
• Acquisitions
Provide support in all aspects of the acquisitions cycle, including:
• support receipt, cataloging, and review of publication proposals
• solicit and facilitate receipt of reviews of those proposals
• draft PTP (proposal to publish) documents, including extensive market research
• give recommendations for new product based on market research
• manage legal documentation for all publication projects, from acquiring to scanning and filing (this includes trademark pursuit and other pubs-related issues requiring legalities)
• Editorial
Provide support in all aspects of the editorial cycle, including:
• ensure that high editorial standards are achieved (thorough scrutiny of manuscripts for internal consistency and completeness)
• actively support editing, with an increase in developmental editing work as determined by management
• prepare incoming manuscripts for production and publication (coding and copyediting prep)
• work with authors to ensure schedules are met
• Production
Provide support in all aspects of the production cycle, including:
• scan, manage, and return student work for publications in production
• assist authors in the securing of permissions, including creating permission logs and soliciting permissions from other publishers
• create art and figure logs for publications in production
• support posting to, checking, and correcting proofs from printer
• assist with sending out advance copies of new publications
• apply for CIP with Library of Congress for each new publication
• Additional Responsibilities
◦ handle changes to and process of reprints (with support from production)
◦ assist in retreat and conference preparation (scheduling author meetings and dinners)
◦ assist in receipt, cataloging, and response to publication-related permission requests
◦ contribute to long-range planning for growth and development of department
◦ perform related duties as required
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
• Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Professional manner in dealing with colleagues, authors, and third-party partners
• Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines
• Extremely detail-oriented
• Ability to conduct thorough, meticulous research, manage multiple projects/priorities, and become engaged with the content a must
• A passion for education and knowledge
• Familiarity with and enthusiasm for the authors we represent and our mission (www.mathsolutions.com)
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor's Degree
• Experience in teaching and/or the book publishing industry is a plus, especially areas of professional development and math
• Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word and Excel
*This position is based in the Boston Office and follows a full-time hours work week.
