Visuals Director, Bon Appetit and Epicurious, The Creative Group
Bon Appetit and Epicurious, two of the biggest food brands in media, are looking for a
hyper-creative, digitally savvy Photo Director to make award-winning work across all our
platforms. The Photo Director will work equally across print and digital for both editorial
and some branded projects, and is prepared to lead collaborations with stakeholders in
design, edit, product, development, marketing, and sales. The idea candidate must be
fueled by the desire to advance the brand and discover unique solutions no matter
what. Managing a team of 8+ fulltime and freelance members, growing talent and
nurturing a creative culture are paramount. Reports to the Creative Director.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
● Work closely with our Creative Director to maintain and advance the visual
identity of the brand by establishing and enforcing visual brand guidelines and
continuously exploring new ways to push our work in photography and visual
storytelling
● Oversee photography team, including staff photographers and stylists, in
day-to-day operations, providing direction, guidance, and structure, conducting
photo meetings and annual employee reviews
● Oversee the photo budget, working with finance director to forecast and actualize
budgets, anticipate company needs and adjust on the fly accordingly
● Hire, train and mentor photo editors, photographers and stylists and expand our
freelance creative network
● Oversee contracts, rights, accounts, and departmental procedures and
negotiations
● Lead key photo-driven initiatives within the brands
● Work with UX and Product teams to ensure that photography is a key
consideration on all new site templates
● Collaborate with key stakeholders across editorial, ad sales, marketing, and other
partners to ensure photography meets our standards and is aligned with their
project objectives
● Setting art direction for key projects
● Assessing how photography is being used on a quarterly basis and leading the
initiative of refreshing areas of the site that need to evolve and change
● Commissioning photographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, set designers,
and other relevant crew
● Sourcing new photographers and growing our network of contributors
Qualifications:
● 7+ years of photography experience with an established publishing company,
online media company, or agency
● Excellent organizational managerial skills and experience managing a team of 6+
members
● Strong network of industry connections across photography, styling and
production
● Strong, well-rounded portfolio demonstrating advanced experience with
innovative photo art direction
● Strong experience with photo research
● Superb communication skills and a positive, solutions-oriented mentality
● Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure handling multiple projects
● Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite
