Job Title: Data Journalist - The Times and The Sunday Times
Department / Division: The Times and The Sunday Times
Location: London
We are looking for a data journalist skilled in computational methods to join our newsroom and help us carry out investigations.
The data team at The Times and The Sunday Times is a computational investigations unit made up of programmer-journalists. We specialise in using computing to find untold stories.
The team works in close collaboration with journalists from the two titles on major stories such as The Sunday Times's exposé of doping in athletics and The Times’s tax avoidance revelations. We also pitch, research and write our own investigations on subjects ranging from cyber security to consumer finance.
We use techniques including statistical modeling, web scraping, geospatial analysis and digital forensics to uncover previously hidden information. We work with reporters and editors to turn data into compelling stories in the public interest.
We are looking for a data journalist who will:
• Work with the team to generate story ideas.
• Pitch, research and write investigations.
• Assist reporters with data journalism techniques across all subjects.
• Build contacts and collaborate inside and outside the newsroom.
You will have the opportunity to continuously develop your skills and to share your knowledge. We are keen to hear from applicants with backgrounds in journalism, academia, computing or related fields.
Beyond data expertise and the ability to deliver rigorous research, you will also be comfortable working to deadlines and in partnership with reporters and editors.
The successful candidate will be part of a team that breaks exclusive stories and pioneers computer-assisted reporting techniques in two newsrooms with proud histories of investigative journalism.
Essential requirements:
• Proficiency using one or more programming languages, such as Python, R or SQL, for data collection and analysis.
• Training or experience in journalism (e.g. news writing, media law, investigative research).
• Awareness of statistical methods.
• Demonstrable interest in public interest journalism and UK current affairs.
Desirable skills and experience:
• NCTJ or equivalent qualification.
• Experience working for a national publication.
• Undergraduate degree.
Please apply with a covering letter and CV by September 10.
