The Times Newspaper Ltd Marketing & Sales department is made up of 4 teams; Brand Strategy & Planning, Retention, Engagement & Operations, Content Sales and Propositions & Market Development, working together to deliver the Sales & Marketing vision. Our strategic objectives:

What’s my personal contribution?
To increase consideration, drive demand, and optimise ecommerce conversion of digital and print subscription sales for The Times and The Sunday Times in UK, Ireland, and International Markets.
Be the hub of digital media and ecommerce expertise within the TNL Sales and Marketing team.
What are my Responsibilities & Accountabilities
• Work with the wider Digital Subscriptions Team and Print Subscriptions team to develop and deliver strategies and plans to grow subscriptions across all markets through digital marketing and ecommerce channels
• Cross-market and cross-team responsibility to drive digital sales, working closely with the Digital and Print Managers for UK, ROI and International who will be responsible for market and acquisition strategy.
• The eCommerce and Digital Media Manager along with the Exec will collaborate with other teams on digital media strategy, media optimisation, and online conversion journeys for all markets.
• Continuously monitor, analyse, and act on data to drive conversion improvements across all aspects of the digital sales journey – from media optimisation, to marketing messaging, and checkout conversion through all Store journeys.
• Develop and implement digital sales strategies and plans to drive traffic and sales
• Manage and optimise CPAs within budget across all markets
• Develop efficient methods of testing propositions, channels and audience targeting techniques to deliver the optimal level of customer sales.
• Lead the development of News UK’s affiliate marketing program, taking a pro-active approach to building strategic business partnerships with 3rd parties and developing innovative affiliate propositions.
• Take ownership of the Discovery strategy (Display, PPC) from a sales perspective. Develop plans to optimise the discovery strategy
• Collaborate with the Audience Development Manager on social media strategy to drive digital sales
• Effectively manage the media agency and other third party agencies/relationships to drive optimal performance and cost effectiveness. Ensure strategies & plans are defined, targets are in place & activity is regularly reviewed.
• Work with the Propositions and Market Development team on business cases for key activity, taking input from Finance where required
• Deliver a ‘best in class’ digital sales customer experience for subscription prospects, educating, informing and converting them. Continually improve the core metrics of consideration and conversion including all checkout and funnel metrics.
• Work in collaboration with the wider Marketing and Sales team to optimise online customer journeys across all digital platforms to drive acquisition and increase rates of conversion for digital and print subscriptions.
• Work with insights teams from internal and external partners (agencies and News UK teams) to inform decision making and strategy development
• Develop, launch and own a digital test and learn programme to maximise conversion and inform decision making – working closely with the Technology teams on implementation and technology partner selection
• Identify 3rd party technologies / tools that can be used to drive short and long term conversion improvements
• Integrate customer segmentation into the online experience, targeting offers and creative differently depending on customer attributes
• Provide constant feedback to the Sales, Marketing, Technology, Customer Experience teams on performance of propositions and campaigns, using Insight and analysis to constantly optimise activities.
• Build a network of knowledge in best practice for digital conversion optimisation across News UK, News Corp and global leaders in sales funnel management.
• Improve performance of the function / department through the analysis of existing business processes, identifying innovative alternatives and recommendations for more effective or efficient ‘ways of working’ / product / service
• Drive the efficient delivery of organisational change projects in support of News UK’s strategic agenda within a culture of empowerment through personal leadership
• Provide support and expert guidance to the Head of Marketing for TLS and Sunday Times Travel Magazine to ensure digital media spend and ecommerce journeys are optimised
• Provide support and expert guidance to the Brand team on digital journey optimisation for key brand campaigns
What do I Know
Useful knowledge, skills and experience
• Be a ‘digital native’ – thorough and proven experience of using digital media to drive sales through digital channels
• Have experience of working in the publishing industry driving digital subscriptions
• Thorough knowledge of site optimisation and managing site optimisation roadmap to enhance digital customer journey. Must be bold in testing new ideas and hypotheses
• Thorough knowledge of digital paid media and proven experience of managing digital media budgets and campaigns, with a view to drive growth an improve efficiency. Advanced experience in managing programmatic display and SEM optimisation is essential.
• Proven experience of understanding and exploiting the ecommerce levers available to you to drive conversion such as cart abandonment and live chat
• Advanced experience in online analytics such as Omniture is and must have the ability to set up and analyse complex reports
• Experience of multi-territory international marketing
• Passion for understanding consumer behaviour and developing marketing strategies to engage, attract and convert new prospects
• Thorough understanding and proven experience of the end to end creative and media process
• Be able to take a pro-active “test and learn” approach to testing and optimising to inform decisions and direction
• Be comfortable taking bold decisions to test new ideas and strategies, challenging the norm, with a ‘fail fast, learn fast’ mentality
• Proven experience of developing revenue driving strategies
• Proven experience of developing and executing high quality creative across traditional and digital channels.
• Strong relationship building skills to develop and nurture stakeholder relationships across News UK, and externally.
• Strong and proven budget management skills
• Have excellent communication and presentation skills to develop a narrative to sell an idea and tell a compelling story to team members, peers, stakeholders, senior execs, and the board.
• Proven ability to work in the here and now in a fast paced marketing and trading environment, as well as keeping one eye on developing strategy and longer term plans.
• Experience in managing a team is desirable
