Senior Manager, Global VAT (Maternity Cover)

SPE’s Corporate Finance UK division are currently looking for a Senior VAT Manager to join their team on a 12 month fixed term basis to cover the maternity leave of another employee.
Reporting to and supporting the UK Finance Director, this role has a global scope and will have two distinct functions:
1) to perform assigned Indirect Tax Compliance responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner. The role will function in accordance with defined operating procedures:
• VAT compliance activities across EMEA are operating effectively to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
• Review of draft VAT and associated returns prepared by in house accountants or outsource partner.
• Collate and prepare VAT returns for some UK companies
• Identifying solutions to problems and driving effective resolution.
• Accountability for identifying and managing implementation of efficiencies in the system to minimise VAT costs to the business.
The role will act as a central point of contact for outsource partner in EMEA and will require the holder to manage relationships effectively with outsourcing partner, third parties, FDs and other relevant business colleagues.
2) to provide timely and accurate VAT advice across all territories and lines of business to ensure that the business is positioned to respond effectively to VAT impacts from
• External regulatory changes and decisions
• Internal business drivers
Detailed responsibilities of the role will include, but are not limited to:
Indirect Tax Compliance (VAT)
• Review and recommend for approval VAT returns for SPE UK and Irish entities, ensuring accurate, timely and complete submission
• Schedule payments, raise payment requests, and reconcile accounts for payments ensuring such payments are made in a timely fashion
• Responsible for review of reconciliation of VAT Returns to SAP ERP GL Codes and management of follow up actions required
• Review and reconciliation of EC Sales Lists, EC Purchase lists (as required), and Intrastat Declarations for all VAT registrations, ensuring accurate, timely and complete submission of all returns
• Liaise with Record to Report function to manage GL postings
• Support the business and manage the contact with tax authorities during VAT audits (where required)
• Review voluntary disclosures to tax authorities
• Monitor the business for VAT compliance e.g. VAT compliant invoices are issued, correct VAT rates are applied to supplies, ERP system review, etc.
Indirect tax Advisory (VAT)
• Identify changes to existing VAT rules, or new requirements; advise and work with the business to ensure SPE is able to comply
• Respond to internal drivers e.g. business restructuring projects, new deals provide suitable advice to ensure the business is in the strongest position by managing potential and real exposure to VAT effectively
• Provide training to the business to raise awareness of the importance of addressing VAT impact on business decisions and of VAT changes to the business
• Identify and promote to the business ways to help to reduce costs in relation to VAT and maximize VAT savings
Financial / Technical
• Ensure all finance and commercial activities comply with the effective application of agreed Sony Corporate Accounting Policy, SOX control procedures and governance systems
• Comply with document retention policy in accordance with legal requirements
• Work with Global Tax Office (GTO), In-Territory Finance(ITF), Shared Services, Home Office, internal and external audit to support audit process and resolution of audit findings
• Work with IT colleagues to ensure that systems meet compliance requirements and are properly maintained and updated
Relationship Management
• Promote an environment based on trust, respect, teamwork, initiative and innovation
• Deliver financially accurate financial information, compliance, efficiency, proactive finance support and technical expertise to internal customers
• Build, maintain and leverage internal and external networks
• Collaborate with VAT colleagues in sister Sony businesses and business colleagues to ensure efficient and effective support to the business needs
• Collaborate effectively with Shared services, IT, Legal, ITF, Home Office and Outsource providers
• Develop, maintain and manage effective relationships with HMRC and third party advisors
Continuous Improvement
• Identify and recommend process improvements to continually improve performance of Shared Services and outsourced VAT financial processes and transactions
• Keep abreast of and understand the implications for all VAT legal changes relevant to the business
• Design and deliver relevant training to improve VAT understanding within the business
• Maintain up-to-date VAT knowledge, using Sony in-house VAT training workshops; updates from advisors and other sources, including reading and understanding the main principles arising from VAT case-law
Candidate Requirements:
• Relevant VAT technical qualification with a BA and/or BS degree.
• Typically 3-5 years’ experience in VAT compliance processes.
• Experience working with and advising senior management
• Experience of working across a Global business within a multi-cultural corporate working environment
• Experience of consensus and commercially based decision making
• Familiarity with International Indirect Tax
• Experience of SAP ERP System
Knowledge of:
• Detailed understanding of local regulatory requirements for EMEA countries
• Familiarity with consumption tax requirements for non-EU countries except the USA preferred
• Understanding of line of business requirements and operations
• Good understanding of the entertainment industry preferred
Skill in:
• SAP Financials
• Excellent keyboard skills:
• MS Excel – Advanced level
