Job Description
Verizon Digital Media Services (VDMS) is looking for a senior leader to join our rapidly growing team. We need someone with network experience at the CDN level and experience managing a global network for applications growing at Internet Scale. We want a person that has significant experience leading operations and engineering teams in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. As a Network Operations Leader, you will be responsible for driving and directing multiple teams of highly skilled Network Engineers. In addition, you will be responsible for end-to-end delivery of the foundation of the CDN; including capacity management, implementation, automation, maintenance, monitoring, provisioning, standards, process management and change control. Our technical leaders tend to be strong engineers who can dive deep and get involved in addition to being strong people leaders and managers.
Responsibilities:
• Manage, recruit, grow, justify and expand a currently-global team of qualified Engineers (Singapore, London, Los Angeles, other locations as needed); own the operational budget for this team; make decisions and be accountable.
• Lead engineering and operations management resources to design, implement, configure, support, and maintain all aspects of the global network infrastructure for health and performance
• Be a mentor to your direct reports providing them with guidance and support to achieve their career path and leadership growth objectives.
• Responsible for the performance, health, maintenance and scalability of entire global network infrastructure on a 24/7 basis to ensure company-wide OKR and KPI objects are met. Create transparency into metrics collected to provide to a wider audience.
• Effectively communicate the goals and direction of the Network Org to your teams of network engineers ensuring resource alignment with VDMS’s global network vision.
• Take ownership for all network issue resolution. Ensure communication of correct urgency and severity to network engineers, internal teams and vendor resources.
• Continuously recruit talented engineers with expertise in routing and switching protocols as well as automation skills.
• Take accountability to ensure retrospectives and learning review discussions are actionable to ensure implementation of corrective and preventive measures to reduce chance for issue to arise again.
• Work closely with our vendors (e.g. Juniper, Arista, Nokia, MRV, Ciena, etc.) to drive the strategic direction of their products and services and support processes align with VDMS network vision and strategy. Find new vendors as needed.
• Oversee the technical training of the engineers on your teams. Ensure all personnel are qualified to perform their respective duties. Manage a training program that raises the baseline knowledge of the operations and engineering teams and provides deep technical knowledge for subject matter experts.
• Interface with and maintain open communication with internal leadership stakeholders to ensure we are providing excellent service, and that we are receiving the same level of support in return.
• Identify and communicate opportunities for automation to remove pain points related to: repetitious operational tasks, improved network monitoring tools, configuration generation and standardization, and new circuit and peer implementations.
• Gather and define requirements for new products leveraging our global networks, including technical documentation for all relevant processes and technologies.
• Work with the Network Operations Center to drive their resolution of network-related incidents to an acceptable closure rate with appropriate MTTRs tracked and reported to drive continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (BSEE, Computer Science, etc.) required, Master’s degree (MSEE or MBA) preferred (or equivalent experience).
• 7 to 10 years of leadership experience in a Network Operations and Engineering environments.
• At least 3 years of experience at the Director level, managing Network Operations teams.
• Expert understanding of Internet routing, BGP, Ethernet switching, optical transport, LINUX, Juniper, and related networking technologies.
• Experience leading network automation teams, especially in Python, Ansible, and data structures (ie: Yaml/JSON) desired.
• Proven experience in designing, documenting and writing deliverable plans for network implementations and supporting processes.
• Visio diagramming and network documentation knowledge required.
• Experience working in an ITIL service delivery or service design environment. ITIL v3 certification preferred.
• Experience leading a team of resources practicing agile/Kanban methodologies to ensure velocity of productivity and streamlined operational workflows.
