The Designer for Franchise reports to the Art Director of Franchise, HMH Books for Young Readers, in the Boston office of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. He or she is responsible for following through with the creative vision for high-end, character-driven and branded children’s picture books, board books, novelty, readers and chapter books (print and digital formats). The Designer sees assigned projects through the design process, from conception through approval and production reviews to finished book.
The Designer performs the following duties:
• Creates designs that are appropriate for both physical and digital versions of the books and that are translatable into multiple formats. Gives continuity to established Franchise series and conceptualizes and directs new concepts through to completion.
• As assigned by Art Director, manages illustrators and other vendors in the creation of cover and interior artwork.
• Works closely with the Art Director to prepare materials for Franchise meetings and jacket meetings.
• Adheres to budgets and scope of work as determined by Art Director.
• Assists with scheduling to ensure key marketing and sales dates are met.
• Ensures proper management of digital assets, following procedures for online use and HMH archive.
Requirements:
• BA in art/design
• Ability to work well under pressure with tight deadlines; excellent time management and communication skills; the ability to juggle multiple projects from concept to final files.
• At least 2-3 years’ experience in children's book design
• Experience working in mass market / TV / film tie-in children’s books
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and timely and efficient follow-up
• A highly collaborative work style, with the ability to interact positively and effectively with editorial, marketing, publicity, and production, as well as with authors, photographers, and other suppliers
• Expert Mac user with proven Adobe Creative Suite skills, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat
• Experience in creating digital files for printing and color proofing
• A solid understanding of image manipulation and color correction
Physical Requirements:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing)
• The person in this position needs to move about inside office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings
• Design portfolio is required
