Job Description Summary
At National Geographic Society, we believe in the power of science, exploration, education and storytelling to change the world. The Director, Digital Content Development will play an important role in bringing this vision to life by leading our content development team in support of current and future Marketing, Education and Explorer digital initiatives at the Society. We create engaged and impactful relationships with our various stakeholder communities, including Explorers, Educators and Students, and Key Influencers (Foundations, Policy Makers, Donors, etc.) across website, mobile and social channels. The Director is responsible for working with stakeholders to determine overall digital editorial/content strategy as well as to manage research, development, optimization and editorial activities for digital content across website, blogs, mobile and social channels.
The Director will lead a digital audience-focused, metrics-driven team to develop content to activate specific high-impact audiences across various owned and operated channels. The Director will manage content development and operations teams and will work closely with various stakeholder, digital product and audience engagement teams.
Responsibilities
• Build and lead a best in class digital content development team that builds, engages and serves multiple active online communities. Create a collaborative environment for the team to develop expertise and innovate in data-driven social media and content distribution. (25%)
• Establish engaging digital content plans for each program and channel, ensuring brand and voice consistency across platform-intentioned content. Define, guide and implement processes for digital content commissioning, creation, curation, quality assurance and publishing. Collaborate with a cross-functional team in the operations of an integrated editorial calendar and associated content creation and deployment. (25%)
• Serve as a digital content subject matter expert within the company as it relates to our digital platforms and communities. Use his/her deep understanding of digital content to enable world-class engagement and social media programs with the audiences in targeted segments. Work closely with stakeholders and other teams throughout NGS to optimize content for our social/digital platforms and channels (25%)
• Communicate and work effectively with executives and cross-functional leads in product, marketing, impact, and audience engagement teams. (15%)
• Work with the analytics team to develop KPIs to measure, report, test and optimize content performance. (10%)
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, business, communications, marketing, mathematics, economics, political science, civics, sociology or related field.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
A minimum of 10+ relevant industry experience, with at least four years of direct, hands-on experience in social/digital content development, with related experience in social/digital marketing, product management and/or community management.
Knowledge and Skills Required
A proven Director of social/digital content development, with demonstrated success planning and executing programs to build targeted, engaged and activated audiences for brands, companies or NGOs.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage a team
• Exceptional skill at clear, concise, and compelling communication.
• Experienced managing, motivating and mentoring digital content development and/or digital content marketing teams.
• Possesses a strong editorial sense of voice and content quality.
• Highly motivated, out-of-the-box thinker who has direct editorial/content as well as an excellent understanding of digital platforms, social media marketing and/or community management.
• Experience working directly with content management, digital publishing, analytics and social media tools
• Experience working with business owners to develop a deep understanding of customer needs.
• Ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross functional teams in product, marketing, impact and social media groups.
• Pro-active self-starter and a “can do” problem solver who thrives with hard challenges in a fast-paced environment
• Strong analytical background to seek data-driven rigor in decision-making.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple simultaneous complex projects to successful completion.
• Flexible and adaptable to changing needs and project requirements.

• Highly intelligent strategist with proven track record of driving successful digital content and digital content marketing strategies to grow and engage audiences.

Supervision
The Director reports to the Senior Director, Owned and Operated and will manage a team of three to six direct reports.
Responsibility percentages may vary depending on business needs.
