Job Description Summary
At National Geographic Society, we believe in the power of science, exploration, education and storytelling to change the world. The Photo Editor will play an important role in bringing this vision to life by ensuring that the organization’s digital content includes engaging, relevant and high-quality images that will resonate on our social and digital media platforms. The Photo Editor will work with teams across NGS to create, curate and deploy content to engage and impact our various stakeholder communities, including Explorers, Educators and Students, and Key Influencers (Foundations, Policy Makers, Donors, etc.) across website, mobile and social channels.
The Photo Editor will select, edit, position and optimize photos across the organization’s digital channels, including website, social media and mobile, and will ensure that deadlines are met.
Responsibilities
• Work closely with internal stakeholders to identify photographic needs and to manage and distribute assets on a timely basis. Research and fulfill asset requests from various internal stakeholders. (25%)
• Log, ingest, review, caption, edit, quality control and archive a high volume of episodic and gallery photography in a deadline-driven environment. Maintain, update and track production schedules. (25%)
• Manipulate photos to achieve high-quality results using appropriate software tools. (25%)
• Work with analytics tools to optimize photo performance for our social and digital channels (15%)
• Stay up to date with the latest image editing technologies and tools. (10%)
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor’s degree in photography, visual arts, digital media or related field.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
A minimum of three years as a digital photo editor at a network, studio or creative agency.
Knowledge and Skills Required
A proven social/digital photo editor, with the following demonstrable attributes:
• Strong photo editing skills and an excellent portfolio.
• Thorough knowledge of computer imaging and photographic techniques.
• Top-notch organizational, time management and communication skills.
• Creative mind with meticulous attention to detail and story-telling skills.
• Pro-active self-starter and a “can do” problem solver who thrives with hard challenges in a fast-paced environment
• Fast thinker and smart strategist who diligently tests and optimizes to achieve goals
• Ability to collaborate and work effectively with cross functional teams in product, marketing, impact, social media and content operations groups
• Thorough understanding of digital photography and associated file formats.
• Knowledge of stock photography usage, acquisition and licensing.
• Understanding of the design production process and terminology.
• Image formatting and retouching skills.
• Experience with leading digital photographic management, editing and analytics tools
