Purpose
The ELT Curriculum & Assessment Director’s role is to take the lead within the ELT Portfolio team in translating pedagogical inputs from multiple stakeholders (customers, Geos, Pedagogy & Improvement, Global Scale of English, Assessment, Efficacy) into best-in-class curriculum and assessment principles that will drive the development, production and implementation of high-value, innovative and customer-centred blended ELT courses across all segments of the ELT Portfolio (Primary, Secondary, Test Prep, Adult) in line with Pearson’s efficacy strategy.
Reporting to the VP ELT Portfolio, the Curriculum & Assessment Director works with the ELT Portfolio Senior Leadership Team and key stakeholders across all functions (Pedagogy & Improvement, Assessment, Content Development, Product Marketing, Digital Product Management, Analytics, User Experience & Design, Finance and Geos) to establish the best ways to achieve ELT pedagogical goals through world-class curriculum and assessment content design, with a particular focus on the learning experience within a blended model. This role is a change agent for all aspects of ELT pedagogy, content and assessment design – leading, supporting and delivering continuous process improvement. The role is instrumental in leading on the adoption and implementation of consistent and standardised ways of working, procedures and processes in support of overall Pearson and Pearson English & Schools content strategies as part of the Pearson ELT Portfolio leadership group.
Key Accountabilities
• Leads the ELT Curriculum & Assessment team in establishing the core pedagogical principles that will ensure the successful creation, development and implementation of learner-focused blended ELT courses. Translates the vision and mission of Pearson as a learner-centric organization into appropriate curriculum and assessment standards across all segments of the ELT Portfolio, ensuring that these can be deployed with fidelity in partnership with all relevant business functions.
• Responsible for establishing current and long-range pedagogical goals, objectives, plans, standards and policies for the ELT Portfolio and Content Development teams, that meet market needs in alignment with the strategic direction of the ELT business.
• Translates Pearson business plans and strategies into actionable models and processes for the Curriculum & Assessment team. Establishes and implements standards and guidelines for pedagogical and assessment experiences and outcomes, to ensure that the Portfolio and Content Development teams design courses consistently and that they can be successfully implemented by Sales & Marketing partners in the Geos.
• Leads on the creation and prioritisation of the digital requirements to support the ELT Portfolio course strategy and roadmap and works with the Portfolio Directors to gather and prioritise research needs. Leads on the design and implementation of curriculum and assessment research, testing of hypotheses and the reporting of evidence gathered, in collaboration with partners in the ELT Portfolio, Content Development, Digital Product Management and User Experience & Design teams.
• Is the leader on matters of more complex ELT pedagogy, challenging issues and developing new curriculum solutions as needed in response to customer requirements.
• Establishes strong relationships with thought leaders and experts in the field of ELT curriculum and assessment design, ensuring that there is a constant stream of information from the markets, and brief project teams on relevant trends and developments in the field.
• Leads and manages the ELT Curriculum & Assessment team to drive continued improvement as they translate market research and customer intelligence into effective and engaging pedagogical principles and standards.
• Partners with the ELT Portfolio Directors to support and foster a culture of high performing teams led by the Portfolio Managers, building and developing a skilled Curriculum & Assessment team to be effective members of the Portfolio project teams.
• Ensures the appropriate balance of consistency of pedagogical approach and specificity to segment across the ELT Portfolio.
• Drives operational and cost efficiencies in order to maximise available investment.
• Accountable for the overhead budget for the Curriculum & Assessment team – preparation and monitoring through the year.
Leadership responsibilities
As a member of the Pearson ELT Portfolio leadership team:
Build and develop consistent practices within the Curriculum & Assessment team while supporting the introduction of an agile process managed within flexible teams empowered to make decisions around delivering product on time, on budget and to customer requirements.
Ensure that all Pearson ELT Portfolio team processes (such as project governance plans, standardised ways of working, content management policies and practices, team communication plans, updates, etc.) are implemented and adhered to and that other teams across Pearson English & Schools have the information they need to keep customers well-informed.
Establish and maintain a workplace culture that promotes openness, risk-taking and innovation, embraces new ways of working and standardised procedures, and that rewards and celebrates success
Suppot and mentor the Curriculum & Assessment team in becoming an enthusiastic and high-performing unit and in driving operational and cost efficiencies in order to maximise available investment
Drive workflow changes in order to enhance the pedagogical design and development of ELT courses, through a programme of continuous improvement.

Profile:
• University/College degree, qualification or relevant experience in Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language
• Instructional Design or related discipline relevant to English as a Foreign or Second Language.
• Minimum 10 years ELT publishing, media, or other relevant management experience in a complex organisation
• Experience managing groups in different countries/locations; ability to navigate a complex and highly matrixed organization effectively
• Possesses sound business acumen; remains pragmatic, calm under pressure; results-focused
• Leadership, mentoring and coaching experience is essential — proven ability in managing change and establishing and supporting winning teams
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills
