The Poughkeepsie Journal, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK is looking for an Investigative Reporter to join the team.
The ideal candidate has at least 5 years of experience writing watchdog investigative that reaches and engages their audience. The candidate researches, reports, writes and helps create compelling text and multimedia journalism that continuously serves the audience by holding public officials and institutions accountable. Develops relationships with sources, citizens, experts and others in order to provide unique insight into the impact of the topic or issue on readers and communities. Makes it a mission to inform and engage readers through immediacy, enterprise reporting and riveting storytelling. Acts as a public ambassador through community outreach and connects with influencers and engaged readers through social media. Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues. Works with the content coach, editors and audience analysts to shape storytelling to meet audience needs and interests on every platform.
Duties:
• Creates a deep base of contacts to maintain a flow of news, information and tips from which to create First Amendment reporting relevant to and of interest to a particular audience.
• Creates storytelling that accurately informs and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics. Works toward becoming a catalyst for positive change in communities, the region and the state.
• Connects with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.).
• Pays special attention to issues and trending topics and how the topic or issue plays a role in the audience’s lives.
• Works with editors and audience analyst to evaluate what's working and what's
• not, and develops plans to better satisfy audience needs.
• Collaborates with content team to provide all the appropriate elements for stories (i.e. photos,
• videos and graphics). Captures basic photos and video as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's in Communications, Journalism or equivalent in experience and education or college degree in a related field
• Internship or previous experience in the job duties preferred.
• Five years of reporting experience, which could include freelancing, internships and college publication work.
• Possesses an in-depth understanding of watchdog reporting, freedom of information laws, access to public records and use of databases.
• Social media skills and video production knowledge required.
• Exceptional core journalism skills (reporting, producing, editing).
• Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers' time and money.
• Self-motivation and self-direction.
• Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
• Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
• Knows how to use time effectively in an always-on workday.
• Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
• Writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
• Photo and video skills.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
• Database reporting skills preferred.
