We have a fantastic and unique entry-level opportunity to assist an Executive Editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books! In this role, the Editorial Assistant will work on fiction and nonfiction sourced from pop culture, celebrities, and social media platforms in the picture book, tween, and teen categories. This is a once-in-a-career opportunity to be part of a start-up group at an established global publisher.
Responsibilities:
• Provides administrative and editorial support to the Executive Editor: opens and sorts mail, makes travel arrangements and appointments, maintains and updates files and records, answers telephones and takes messages, prepares expense reports and processes invoices.
• Researches and identifies pop culture trends and popular social media or web presences for potential translation to book platform.
• Reads and evaluates submissions and drafts rejection letters.
• Monitors the book production schedule for the Executive Editor’s titles and traffics all publication materials.
• Drafts jacket copy and assists with marketing fact sheets and reviews marketing material.
• Reads behind Executive Editor and provides detailed feedback on select titles.
• Conducts sales research, creates profit and loss statements, drafts contract requests and check requests.
• Provides administrative support to HarperTeen Editorial Director.
Qualifications:
• Four-year college degree or equivalent work experience
• Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively
• Excellent communication skills
• Exceptional writing skills
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Affinity for pop culture, social media, and the online space as well as commercial fiction and nonfiction
• Publishing-related or non-publishing-related marketing or publicity experience a plus
• Awareness of general marketplace and children’s book industry a plus
