Junior Designer - Ten Speed Press
Summary
The graphic design department at Ten Speed Press, a premier lifestyle trade book publisher that includes imprints Watson-Guptill and Lorena Jones Books, seeks a highly creative junior book designer to join its in-house team. The designer works closely with the creative director, the editorial department, and renowned authors to conceive of book design concepts, with an emphasis on illustrated formats, while designing and producing book interiors and jackets.
Responsibilities:
• Collaborates with creative director, editorial team, and authors to create one-off creative book designs, from concept to print-ready files, within established budget and guidelines.
• Follows design and creative direction with authors.
• Collaborates with senior art director on shared book projects.
• Has creative ideas and is able to share and articulate vision.
• Maintains schedules and meets deadlines on assigned projects.
• Commissions work from freelance designers, photographers, and illustrators, and monitors progress, with collaboration of senior art director.
Requirements
• Graphic design skills and computer/technical knowledge for book production.
• A passion and eye for good typography and trends in design.
• Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite CC: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Acrobat Distiller, and Acrobat Pro.
• Working knowledge of MS Office programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong knowledge of typefaces and typography, design, and editorial page layout.
• Ability to think creatively and be an effective problem solver, while staying on schedule.
• Good communication skills.
• A team player and the ability to work independently, but know when to ask for help.
Experience and education:
• Four-year college degree/BFA/art technical school preferred.
• Up to two years of experience, preferably in print design.
