The Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Solution / Software Architect to join our technology team responsible for the ActiveLearn platforms for schools. With around 3 million users across the UK and internationally, these key platforms deliver the content for Pearson's major products such as Bug Club, Abacus and Edexcel GCSE materials.
Key Responsibilities
To lead definition and implementation of technical and architectural standards and strategy for a range of customer-facing teaching and learning services.
Working with the Platform Managers and Technical Leads, you will help the platform development teams deliver new features and architectural improvements, ensuring technology standards and strategy are followed and the code is written in an efficient, clear and maintainable manner, including documentation.
Working with Enterprise Architecture and Global Learning Services teams, you will ensure alignment with global technology strategy, and identify opportunities to improve collaboration across teams and reuse of technology capabilities.
Working with business stakeholders, you will support them with content creation standards and provide them technical guidance and support.
You will be working within a matrix organisation to lead teams - both in house and outsourced, on- and off-shore - and will play a lead role in establishing good team dynamics, high productivity and continuous improvement.
Essential Experience
Experience working as a Solution Architect, Software Architect, Technical lead or other equivalent role.
Experience of working on complex consumer-orientated digital projects or programmes;
Strong record of delivery using iterative software development practices;
Desirable Experience
Experience of working in educational, publishing or media organisations;
Understanding of and practical experience of implementing web sites with good User Experience;
Improving and developing platforms for performance and security;
Clear understanding of agile development tools and methodologies;
Experience of leading distributed development teams and matrix organisations
Desirable Qualifications
Relevant qualifications in computer science
Qualifications in Agile methodologies
High levels of literacy and numeracy
Graduate Degree preferred
Skills and Experience
Solid technical understanding of web technologies and solution design;
Knowledge of industry standards and legal requirements;
Understanding of modelling techniques and the meaning of architectural artefacts;
Ability to interpret code and schemas and write routines and queries;
Able to facilitate debates using attentiveness, reason, diplomacy and authority;
Proven determination to understand and overcome obstacles and issues;
Experience in working with third-party suppliers across multiple sites;
