The Reno Gazette-Journal is looking for a politics reporter to cover local and state issues in a swing state whose election outcomes put it in the national spotlight.
The right candidate will have multimedia skills to produce high-impact watchdog journalism, both dailies and longer-term project work, across a variety of subjects, but most importantly work that resonates with our readership.
We are looking for a self-starter who can get to the stories behind the procedures in the statehouse. The perfect candidate will use data and old-fashioned reporting legwork to uncover stories, experience with Freedom of Information Act and Open Records law, and a desire to hold public officials accountable.
The Reno Gazette-Journal is devoted to watchdog journalism and regularly wins awards for investigative and enterprise work. The management team is dedicated to helping reporters grow those skills, and training and coaching are provided.
Reno is located at the base of the majestic Sierra Nevada, with mountains rising on one side and the Great Basin desert stretching to the east, providing endless variety of outdoor recreation. You can ski within minutes of town at one of more than a dozen resorts, kayak the river that runs through the city, hike, cycle and more. The annual Burning Man festival is nearby, and annual festivals celebrate cars, hot air balloons, motorcycles, vintage planes, rodeo, the arts, music and more.
