Editorial Assistant/Assistant Editor - Berkley
Penguin Random House is seeking an Editorial Assistant/Assistant Editor to provide editorial and administrative support to the Berkley imprint. Reporting to two Executive Editors, the position will work closely with both editors on commercial fiction titles, particularly suspense, thrillers, and women’s fiction, and backlist relaunch.
Specific responsibilities include:
1. Working with authors, publishers, agents, and the Managing Editorial department to coordinate and keep track of the production process from finished manuscript to bound book.
2. Reading and evaluating manuscripts, writing reader’s reports, logging submissions, and drafting rejection letters.
3. Writing catalog, flap, cover, and marketing copy.
4. Preparing title information sheets and other marketing materials, including researching appropriate competitive titles.
5. Liaising with other departments, including Marketing, Publicity, and Subrights.
6. Attending backlist meetings, writing new copy, and creating revised tip sheets for backlist titles.
7. Providing general administrative support by answering phones, taking messages, filing electronic and hardcopy materials, scheduling, requesting author payments, keeping track of projects’ due dates and schedules, fielding questions from authors, etc.

• 4 year college degree or equivalent work experience
• Minimum 2 years editorial experience to be considered at the Assistant Editor level
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects in a deadline driven environment
• Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and follow-up skills
• Ability to take initiative and problem solve creatively
• Proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
