This role is the primary Studio/Control Room Director for the daily live extended news programming with a studio-based presence planned for NY1 News. This role will work closely with both the Line producers, Senior Producers and the VP, Content/EP as well as all studio, and control room crew and staff, and interface closely with graphics, music, set design, lighting and network operations to play a very significant role in the vision, creation, execution and ongoing template of our network studio look, feel and process. This role will oversee the work done by other (free-lance) directors on days or times when he/she is not working in the studio. The role seeks a calm, organized Director who works well under pressure and treats co-workers with respect and positive energy even in the most stressful and pressure filled moments – and will instill that in those around him/her.
Essential Job Functions:
• Established and experienced live news program Director.
• Deep, experience and creative skills in all aspects of studio live news productions
• Comfort level to work closely in the design and implementation of sets, lighting, sound, graphics, music in both the startup, rehearsal and on air launch of the network leading to mature operations.
• Experience and comfort level to work with Technical Director to create and execute a cutting-edge show “environment” through the use of modern hardware, techniques and electronic visual effects.
• Creative collaboration with crew for best shots and angles to enhance sets, talent, graphics and content.
• Experience and comfort in a news-style broadcast journalistic environment to work with show producers and management to interpret show scripts, formats and story lines and execute them into a tight, state of the art production.
• Will work closely with network operations management in the hiring, evaluation and improvement of staff and free-lance crewmembers who are working under the director’s leadership on the programs.
Position Requirements:
• Direct live and/or recorded studio-based programs
• Lead technical directors, managers, crew members, etc. to discuss details of production, such as camera operations, script, music, sets, lighting, graphics, etc.
• Perform typical functions during production such as conferring and cueing crew, talent, etc. in collaboration with show producers, etc.
• Establish pace of programs and sequences of scenes according to time requirements and talent and set accessibility.
• Consult with writers, producers, or talent about script changes, etc. to create final drafts.
Knowledge & Experience
• Knowledge of lighting, shot framing, camera blocking and sound engineering.
• Experience in usage of multiple cameras.
• Solid knowledge base and experience managing production staff.
• In-depth crew experience working in live TV.
• Strong understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
• Strong remote production leadership skills at both editorial and practical levels
• Strong story-based journalistic instincts and skills and the ability to bring that out in others.
• Ability to understand, evangelize and maintain company brand pillars and culture of the workplace in a meaningful way to the staff and free lancers.
• Comfortable working within established budgetary parameters
• Resolve personnel problems that arise during the production process by acting as liaison with the parties when necessary.
• Will have ability to handle various tasks simultaneously, organize, prioritize, make decisions and work efficiently and effectively under deadlines.
Formal Education & Certification
• College diploma preferred, university degree in Film, Communications or TV directing and/or equivalent work experience.
• 4+ years of experience in Production, TV directing and/or leadership position in a TV studio.
Travel Requirements:
• Travel is possible depending upon project needs

• On-call availability for 365 days per year.
