The Associated Press seeks a talented journalist to join its bureau in Washington as a news editor. Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Bureau for Newsgathering, this News Editor will immediately assume responsibility for AP's reporting on the ongoing investigations of the Trump administration's potential ties to Russia, working in concert with editors overseeing coverage of the White House, National Security and Legal Affairs. This sprawling story requires a news manager who has extensive experience in bringing together reporters from across the newsroom to create a team capable of consistently breaking news and creating distinct, richly reported enterprise. The successful candidate will be skilled at the organization and allocations of resources, and may occasionally serve as a reporter, in the pursuit of those goals. The news editor will apply these same tactics on future stories that demand a newsroom-wide effort, working across media formats to serve AP's wide-ranging set of customers across the globe. Work at nights and on weekends is occasionally required.
The successful candidate will:
_ lead a team to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage of designated story lines that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
_ have a demonstrated history of reporting on and running a complex story, and have the skills needed to motivate and inspire a team of journalists to achieve success in challenging reporting environments.
_ have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
_ pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Qualifications: This News Editor must have demonstrated excellence as a journalist, with a deep record of delivering exclusive, enlightening and distinctive stories on challenging assignments. Applicants must be able to lead, guide, motivate and innovate inside a multi-format newsroom, and be able to coordinate and communicate with AP staffers throughout the company and AP customers worldwide. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with colleagues and peers in teams, and should have at least five years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
Other qualifications:
_ Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
_ Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
_ Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
_ Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
_ Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a complex, challenging story lines.
_ History of leadership of journalists working in more than one format is a decided plus.
