The Associated Press seeks a text editor for a 20-week temporary assignment at its East Regional Desk in Philadelphia, PA. Editors on the regional desk edit and publish text from a 10-state region that includes New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio. They are part of a dynamic, round-the-clock operation, working on state, national and global stories in concert with editors from other media formats — photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics. Desk editors work closely with news editors and reporters in bureaus to ensure AP content is accurate, well-written, packaged creatively, well promoted and moves quickly. They ensure that urgent news is published promptly and accurately, while looking for opportunities to create enterprise ideas off that news. Work at night and on weekends is a regular feature of this job and is required.
The successful candidate will:
_ uphold AP’s values of speed and accuracy, and work with their colleagues to produce a report that prioritizes breaking news.
_ be comfortable collaborating with other departments and have experience with various types of social media and enhancing the digital presentation of news.
_ think creatively about ways to present content to meet the varying needs of AP customers and be comfortable with embracing emerging technology.
Qualifications: This newsperson must be inquisitive and a natural at seeking ways to present a story in the most appropriate form and on the most appropriate platform, so that it appeals to local, national and global audiences in a digital age. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with colleagues and peers in teams, be able to exercise news judgment in accordance with AP’s mission, work accurately and quickly under deadline, and juggle multiple tasks effectively and independently. They will have the ability to work in multiple formats and/or as part of a team that includes editors and reporters working in multiple formats, and will adapt to a fast-changing news environment and provide support at critical times to AP reporters on deadline.
Other qualifications:
_ Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
_ Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
_ Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
_ Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.
_ Outstanding communications skills, including the ability to cooperate with and direct reporters and editors remotely.
