Position Summary
As Senior Director Software Engineering you will hold responsibility, ownership, and ultimate accountability for the planning, execution, delivery, and success of a major product development initiative within the Blackboard Learn product line. Reporting to the Vice President of Software Engineering, you will lead a team of Development Managers to define, plan, develop, and deliver software releases of our market-leading Blackboard products.
You will lead the collaboration of cross-functional teams to distill the product strategy into achievable software development plans, within budget and resource constraints, and drive the team to deliver the committed features on time and with quality. You will also drive collaboration with other teams throughout Blackboard to anticipate customer needs and ensure the success of the release in the field. Throughout the process, you will identify, manage, and drive resolution of risk, and manage effective communication to all stakeholders.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Manage software product releases on a frequent delivery schedule, coordinating the activities of multiple development teams around the globe.
• Work with teams to define and document project goals and objectives, and support tracking of progress against these goals.
• Work with architects and engineering teams to manage a technology roadmap and define farmeworks, practices, and processes that maximize quality and development efficiency.
• Work with Product Managers, Designers, and project teams to prioritize development activities and maximize value within resource and schedule constraints
• Provide regular project status, dashboard, milestones, and risk assessment reports to appropriate stakeholders, addressing both successes and challenges.
• Be a highly visible advocate for your team and your product to both internal and external audiences.
• Use data to measure and improve overall team productivity and product cost.
• Work with Product Management, Design, Development and operations to negotiate and offer alternatives on risky/complex/expensive requirements and negotiate priorities and timelines.
• Be an advocate for agile development methodologies while delivering on all committed projects.
• Collaborate with other members of the Learn product development staff to develop a true sense of shared responsibility & energy for the entire product, from conception through deployment.
• Recruit, mentor, organize, motivate and coach a team of software engineering professionals. Manage professional development plans to advance the career of everyone within the team. Define and monitor goals.
• Identify and coach future leaders to take on additional personnel and technical responsibility.
• Enable collaboration between team members and others across the product development organization in an effort to best leverage the skills and knowledge of all engineers.
• Create an environment where cross functional teams enjoy working together by organizing team events, meetings, and other activities.
• Expect to be traveling approximately monthly, mostly to other Blackboard offices.

Professional Qualifications
The person in this role must be comfortable with complex software development projects and be an innovative thinker capable of communicating multifaceted technical concepts. The candidate must have a track record of driving the complex technological change of a major enterprise product.
Required Skills And Experiences:
• Full stack and full lifecycle product development executive leadership using modern web and cloud technologies
• Proven track record of achieving high quality Enterprise and SaaS product re-architecture
• An expert in Agile processes
• Comfortable communicating both good and bad news to all levels of the organization
• Experience using data to drive the organization to make decisions
• A record of establishing programs of continual improvement via better processes and tools
• Experience influencing the practices of other product teams within the company, including design, engineering, and operations
• Management of large global teams
• A proven track record of delivering industry leading software products
• Proven experience building high functioning teams
• Bachelor’s degree in a technical or management discipline
