Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.
Chief Editor―Nature Machine Intelligence; San Francisco, New York, London, Berlin.
Springer Nature, the publisher of Nature, is looking to recruit a Chief Editor for Nature Machine Intelligence, a new journal for scientists and engineers that will launch in 2019.
Nature Machine Intelligence will publish both fundamental and applied research across all areas of machine intelligence, including machine learning, robotics and artificial intelligence. The journal will also include work on human-machine interactions and it will cover the ethical, legal and societal dimensions of advances in machine intelligence.
Research in the field is highly interdisciplinary and the journal will incorporate elements of computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, materials science, computational and theoretical neuroscience, and psychology.
To help realize this exciting vision, we require an ambitious, dynamic Chief Editor, who will develop, launch and establish Nature Machine Intelligence as the leading publication covering all aspects of the new journal.
Applicants must have a PhD and preferably postdoctoral experience, with a strong track record in research relevant to the fields covered in the journal and listed above. Previous editorial and/or managerial experience is an additional advantage.
The successful applicant will lead an editorial team, and work closely with them on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, commissioning and editing of Reviews and News & Views, and writing for the journal. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences — willingness to travel is essential.
Working within a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes Nature, Nature Physics, Nature Biotechnology and Nature Nanotechnology among others, this demanding and stimulating role calls for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science. The successful candidate will be dynamic and outgoing, and have excellent interpersonal skills. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills and the ability to absorb new areas of research are prerequisites.
The position will be based in one of our main editorial offices in San Francisco, New York, London or Berlin.
Applicants should send a CV; a statement (1,500 words) that encapsulates their vision for the journal’s content, competitive position and longer-term development; and a brief cover letter explaining their interest in the post and their salary expectations.
The closing date for applications is 10 July 2017.
