VANCOUVER Senior Image & Color Scientist
The Senior Image & Color Scientist will be responsible for the design, development and enhancement of the color process for complex production projects and the development of new systems. You will analyze and implement advanced technologies in support of color and image processing systems, and ensure that the technical quality and integrity of the colors rendered throughout the production pipeline are of the highest standard. You will be a team player with a strong global multi-site mindset.
• Design, develop and maintain a fully color managed workflow across the entire visual effects pipeline.
• Work with the core image pipeline team to integrate the color management workflow and processes into all of ILM's sub-pipelines and tools, including both proprietary and off the shelf software.
• Establish display calibration specifications, evaluate and recommend new display hardware, and work with vendors to guide their products to meet our specific needs
• Profile and characterize all new digital cameras and film emulsions that come our way.
• Develop proprietary image processing and media management tools to aid in the visual effects workflow; complexity ranges from simple shell scripts to large scale software projects.
• Develop and enhance color image processing technologies to meet studio needs.
• Provide guidance to ILM’s technical assistants, ensuring they understand the image conversion process.
Requirements:
Education / Experience:
• Bachelor degree in Computer Science or related discipline
• 8 to 10 years of Computer programming experience with C++, Python, etc.
Required Skills/ Competencies:
• Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills
• Ability to interface with major clients, industry vendors and internal stake holders.
• Capacity for engaging globally across ILM and implementing technology developments accordingly
• Ability to take on responsibility, ownership, decision making and strategic leadership.
Preferred Skills / Competencies:
• Strong knowledge of cameras, scanners, image media, film characteristics & processing
• Strong knowledge of display device technology, market place and advanced calibration techniques
• Strong knowledge of image codecs and file formats
• Good awareness of cross-sector solutions for color science implementations.
• Strong understanding of visual perception theory
• Engagement with the relevant industry initiatives such as ACES, OpenColorIO, OpenEXR, etc.
• Keen interest in future technology trends
Technical Skills:
• Direct experience of image processing development for commercially available software such as Nuke and RV
• Experience with designing color pipelines for complex VFX in large-scale multi-site pipelines and their complex data sets
• Experience with on-set data capture techniques and VFX lighting/compositing/grading
• Complete understanding of colour science principles and implementation techniques
• Complete understanding of end-to-end VFX workflows from on-set to delivery
• Demonstrable ability to develop colour transforms and image processing algorithms
• Programming expertise in image processing, colour science and associated VFX techniques
• Strong experience with display device management, interpretation and diagnostics
