The BDJ Portfolio is published by Springer Nature on behalf of the British Dental Association (BDA) and includes the British Dental Journal (BDJ), the UK’s foremost dental journal, alongside five other dental publications. We aim to inform our readers of ideas, opinions, developments and key issues in dentistry - clinical, practical and scientific - to spark interest, debate and discussion amongst all dental professionals.
The Production Editor role is a fantastic opportunity to work on a great range of publications that will demonstrate your keen eye for detail and flair for creative editorial design in a supportive team focused environment. You will be responisible for creating pages and artwork for digital and print products adhering to strict deadlines, with particular responsibility for BDJ In Practice, BDJ Open and Evidence-Based Dentistry.
Responsibilities
• Page layout and artwork creation/ manipulation for titles as required, using industry standard software, including InDesign, PhotoShop and Illustrator
• Photo/image research
• Managing the workflow of accepted content through to agreed publication deadlines
• Maintaining journal/magazine style and providing advice to editors/copy-editors/authors as appropriate on house style and artwork preparation
• Proof layouts to editors and/or authors making corrections as appropriate.
• Compile issues for online/print
• Monitoring turnaround times and QC from external suppliers and identifying/flagging problems
• Develop and build good relationships with internal and external colleagues
• Work with the Advertising and Marketing departments to ensure that ads are accommodated and house styles are adhered to within marketing materials
• Related admin duties (filing/archiving)
• Such other tasks as the company may assign from time to time

Experience and skills
Essential
• Experience in creating online/print magazine/journal products is essential
• Excellent knowledge of standard industry software – InDesign, PhotoShop and Illustrator.
• Background in typesetting, design or layout
• Excellent communicator
• Flexibility and adaptability
• Ability to work individually or as part of a team
• Attention to detail
Desirable
• Experience of magazine publishing
• Good Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Understanding of pre-press systems and print processes
• Use of tracking and content management databases/systems
• Problem-solving skills
