Assistant Editor, Road & Track
Road & Track magazine is looking for a talented, energetic assistant editor to join our tight-knit team in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The primary responsibility of the assistant editor will be fact-checking articles before they go to print; this is a critical function, the bedrock of the magazine’s authority. Other duties include crafting display type, assisting with vehicle testing and compiling specifications, assisting with photo shoots, and representing the magazine at trade shows and industry events. There will also be ample opportunities to pitch ideas, write, and generally learn the ins and outs of producing a high-quality print publication. If you’ve been dreaming of working at a national car magazine, this is your golden opportunity.
Responsibilities:
• Carefully fact-check articles before they go to print in order to maintain accuracy of Road & Track.
• Constantly think up ideas for new stories and help iterate existing ones.
• Evaluate cars by effectively communicating how they look, work, feel, and drive.
• Work closely with the feature editor and copy editor to guide stories to publication.
• Assist as needed with various magazine administrative tasks.
• Represent the magazine at auto shows and media events.
Qualifications:
Fact-checking requires diligence, attention to detail, and resourcefulness. Also, the willingness to pick up a phone or dive into a library. For this position, we require at least a year of professional fact-checking experience at a publication, along with reporting and writing experience. We also value those who are immersed in the enthusiast-car world or are at the least eager to dive in. Experience driving cars on track is a plus. The assistant editor should also have appreciation for a wide variety of stories and media—automotive blogs, but men’s magazines, lifestyle publications, and newspapers, too. Excellent communication skills are a must, as is the ability to balance a number of assignments under deadline pressure. Some level of travel is also to be expected. Note: Please submit unedited writing samples along with a résumé in .pdf format.
Since Road & Track is part of the Hearst Corporation we offer an excellent benefits package.
