VP Editorial - Trade
The role will provide creative and strategic leadership to grow the middle grade and YA fiction lists at HMH BFYR, focusing on commercial fiction— through acquiring and editing approximately 10 titles a year, informing on potential acquisitions in these categories, and managing a team of 3 editors.
Responsibilities:
• Acquire and edit approximately 10 commercially successful middle grade and YA titles per year
• Consider and inform on potential acquisitions in middle grade and YA, focusing on strategically building HMH’s success in these categories, balancing the list, and building authors’ careers at the house
• Manage and oversee a team of 3 editors to build on the goals of the role and house
• Build and maintain strong relationships with agents, authors, illustrators and packagers
• Prepare or coordinate acquisitions materials, including but not limited to p&ls, comp title research, and project highlights, and present titles to editorial, sales, marketing, and publicity teams
• Create or coordinate sales and marketing materials, including but not limited to pub cards, catalog copy, launch presentations and cover copy
• Work cooperatively and productively with production, design, publicity, marketing, and sales departments to ensure great publication outcomes and results
Required:
• BS/BA in related discipline.
• 7+ years’ experience in children’s editorial
• Track record of highly successful acquisitions and publications
• Deep relationship base with agents and proven ability to build supportive and constructive relationships within and outside of the organization
• Strong negotiation skills
• Management experience
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively with close attention to detail.
• Strong understanding and awareness of general marketplace and relevant market segments within industry
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
