The Executive Director, Brand Strategywill report in to the Vice President, Exec Director of Marketing and Publicity and will lead marketing strategy for all of HMH's Author/Title Brands. The role requires a nimble and innovative thinker, curious about testing new ideas and with a deep understanding of how smart branding can extend the life of a product beyond its immediate utility and position it for future growth. This is a strategic role that will have direct impact on the success of our Authors and Brands and greatly influence how we market and extend our most important titles.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Provide strategic direction and oversight for all HMH Brands (including Little Blue Truck, Curious George) and Author Brands (including Melissa Hartwig, Kwame Alexander, Mark Bittman).
• Pursue and develop new opportunities to grow HMH Brands and Authors, including extensions into new formats and platforms (such as digital, audio and multimedia).
• Develop positioning and messaging strategy for key author imprints, beginning with Kwame Alexander.
• Work across trade division and broader company to identify partnerships, content and marketing opportunities that will extend our Brands, Authors and Imprints.
• Nurture external relationships with key authors (and agents).
Requirements
• 7-10 years brand management and/or marketing experience, preferably in publishing, media or education.
• Demonstrated experience as a manager.
• Strong managerial, communication, organizational and writing skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access), Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator and other design tool files.
The ideal candidate will also possess most of the following characteristics and skills:
• A digital mindset and familiarity with the disruptive forces shaping publishing.
• An understanding and appreciation of marketing metrics and how those can improve effectiveness and accelerate learning.
• Ability to successfully work across departments/company and bring disparate teams together to envision new ideas.
• Curiosity and ingenuity.
Physical Requirements
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (standing or sitting).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access files cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
