Description
As a leading worldwide provider of navigation devices and wearable technology, our focus is on developing, designing and supporting superior products. Our advanced technology promotes performance, safety and ease of use in every market we serve. That makes us an engineering and technology company with a keen focus on recruiting talent in those fields. But the same vertical integration business model that keeps all design and manufacturing processes in-house also gives us the incentive to hire top performers from different backgrounds, including operations, finance and accounting, information technology, sales, marketing and communications.
At Garmin, our engineers create products that solve complex problems and make people’s lives safer, healthier and more enjoyable. From sketches on paper to something you can hold in your hands, our camera hardware designers are involved in production every step of the way. They design and build prototypes and develop their own tests and fixtures. They work with mechanical engineers, manufacturing engineers, electrical engineers, and software engineers to create better products with superior imaging and performance. Whatever your passion – parts, products, design or project scope – you can find it at Garmin.
We are looking for a full-time Optical Design Engineer with advanced skills to design and develop next generation consumer electronics at our headquarters in Olathe, Kansas, a beautiful suburb of Kansas City. • Provide detailed specifications for the acquisition of lenses, optical coatings, and materials common in consumer applications. Includes liaison with overseas suppliers of optical components and assemblies.
• Specification and design of optical alignment and test equipment required for both development and production phases for the project.
• Optical system simulation, prototyping, testing, characterization and optimization.
• Identification and analysis of MTF, parallax, ghosting, stray light, spherical aberrations, relative illuminance, etc.
• Understanding and leadership in the prevention and correction of optical issues related to use of high tolerance components, material thermal coefficients, etc.
• Thorough understanding in the use of precision optical tools used for high tolerance alignment in the manufacture of optical systems and camera modules.
• Support overseas production facilities in the manufacture of optical systems.
• Perform cost/size/performance tradeoff analysis of different optical configurations.
• Investigate the usage of the latest components, tools, materials and technologies.
