Job Description:
Amplify builds innovative and compelling digital educational products that empower teachers and students across the country. We have a long history as a leading innovator in K-12 education - and have been described as the best tech company in education and the best education company in tech. While others try to shrink the learning experience into the technology, we use technology to expand what is possible in real classrooms with real students and teachers.
Amplify ELA is a uniquely interactive curriculum that brings complex texts to life and inspires middle grade students to read more deeply, write more vividly, and think more critically. The program presents an opportunity for teachers to integrate their best teaching practices with new technologies that allow them to increase the impact of their feedback to students, to facilitate close readings that engage students in rigorous analysis, and to use formative and summative data to support all students.
We don’t believe that our work is over the moment a teacher has a new curriculum. Instead, it’s just beginning -- Amplify’s professional development provides teachers with the instruction, practice, and steady support they need to fully unlock the power of the Amplify ELA curriculum. We craft our professional development to support teachers as they transition to digital, show teachers how to get the most out of each interactive close reading session, walk teachers through the targeted feedback cycle and the use of data, and refine teachers’ understanding of the content in each unit.
We are seeking a Director, Professional Development Design to lead the design and development of professional development content for both asynchronous web-based and on-site training for our core ELA and designated ELD programs, and for our modular ELA units. Professional development includes training teachers on curriculum, pedagogy, product and technology, and training school leaders on implementation and supporting the program, and instructional coaching. The professional development is designed for live, online, and blended training sessions and should be rooted in instructional design and adult learning theories.
Reporting to the Chief Academic Officer, Amplify ELA, the Director, Professional Development Design will:
• Design solutions and craft compelling programs for delivering Amplify ELA’s PD to educators
• Collaborate with Amplify ELA’s experienced trainers and Director of PD Implementation identifying key training goals to prepare educators to use the Amplify ELA products effectively and with satisfaction
• Manage the identification and selection of a remote, asynchronous learning delivery system that will meet the needs of the product, PD, and our customers
• Find and manage remote professional development facilitators, designers and other resources needed to develop PD content, aligning resources, skills, and needs to the specific needs of PD projects
• Coach and prepare PD facilitators to deliver PD, ensuring that facilitators have strong foundations, as well as targeted preparation specific to the engagement
• Project manage (design, scope, budget) development of custom PD
• Assess impact and effectiveness of training by 1. collecting and analyzing feedback from our partners and PD participants, and 2. working with CAO to develop key measures of PD effectiveness
• Incorporate client feedback to continuously improve the professional development experience
• As needed, meet with district and school leaders to advise on PD approach, assess satisfaction and make changes to service offering as necessary
• Support PD implementations as needed, including being on-site to support and deliver trainings
• Collaborate with the PD delivery, product, and content teams to understand upcoming feature releases and content offerings and incorporate into training programs and assets
• Support and train sales teams on new PD offerings and pricing; answer questions and, on occasion, accompany sales people as subject matter expert to present products to key customers
• Support CAO, Amplify ELA in carrying out team and department goals in support of Amplify ELA’s mission
To do all that well, we think the Director, Professional Development needs to:
• Work closely with the CAO, Amplify ELA to understand the team vision and its importance in the overall architecture of the organization
• Collaborate closely with the Director of PD Implementation and our team of experienced trainers so that the work of each team supports the development and delivery of highly successful PD that districts will love
• Be ready to lead teams to success in the classroom and beyond.
• Have executive presence to influence and collaborate with senior level staff internally, in schools and in districts
• Be well-versed in the field of adult learning, particularly online PD
• Have a “roll up your sleeves” attitude -- willing to get into the details when needed to pitch in or problem solve. Such work may include re-configuring the schedule, correcting spreadsheet formulas, preparing training rooms, or delivering training
• Professionally broker resolutions with honesty and integrity in the face of conflict or disagreement
You will have these qualifications:
• You have experience (at scale) helping adults learn new ways of teaching and adopt new behaviors (whether you call it professional development, training, or something else)
• You respect the experience of others, search out the latest knowledge and synthesize both to identify an effective plan
• You’re impact-oriented and big-thinking: you talk in terms of human development, learning progressions, and change management - not “training sessions delivered”
• You believe well designed uses of technology have a meaningful place in how adults learn and develop
• You’ve worked in schools or school districts - you’ve been a classroom educator or have extensive frontline experience in the complex, busy lived reality of school life
• You’ve led teams - you know how to get people motivated, rowing in the same direction, and focused on a common goal - even when times are tough
• You are able to analyze and present data to determine trends and necessary actions
• You have a background in literacy and/ or middle grade development - at very least, you have a deep interest in the challenge of pushing the needle on middle grade reading and writing
• You understand the school administration landscape, its challenges and how to navigate through them
