Job Description Summary
At National Geographic Society, we explore, document and share what we find to drive new understanding of how the world works and our place in it. Special Project Assistant Editor is responsible for assisting Producers and Editors in the post production process. The Assistant Editor reports directly to the Senior Producer of Special Projects.
Responsibilities
• Editor Support and Media Management: Create and maintain highly organized project files within non-linear editing systems (typically Premiere and AfterEffects.) Work closely with editors to ensure they have the assets they need for their work in a timely manner. Create an efficient system for organizing and supporting multiple editing projects at once. Troubleshoot editing system and footage compression problems. (40%)
• Exports and Compressions: Export final videos and project files to correct specifications. Create textless versions and split tracks. Create compressions to correct specifications. Archive final files and original footage. (30%)
• Editing: Edit videos to completion, and create rough assemblies of more complex projects. (20%)
• Online/proofing:Complete online edits, substituting proxy files for final full-res footage. Proof final videos and all exports, watching closely to check for flash frames, export glitches and other errors in the final videos. (10%)
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
3+ years of experience in a post-production environment.
Knowledge and Skill Required
The successful candidate will possess and understanding and familiarity with operation of media production, especially editing software (Adobe Premier and After Effects). Proven work experience as a video editor. Demonstrable video editing ability with a strong portfolio. Thorough knowledge of timing, motivation and continuity. Familiarity with special effects, 3D and compositing. Creative mind and storytelling skills. Ability to prioritize workflows. Attention to detail. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
