Newsperson/Fact Checks Producer
The Associated Press seeks a talented visual journalist, Newsperson/Fact Checks Producer, based at its New York headquarters, for a year-long project aimed at fighting misinformation with fact checks and other forms of accountability journalism. Reporting to the Fact Checks News Editor, this producer will create visual journalism for digital use, including on AP's digital platforms, focused on fact checks and accountability journalism. The successful candidate will work with a global team of news developers, designers, producers and editors to create compelling stories, including data visualizations, maps, rich multimedia packages and information graphics with a strong emphasis on mobile and social distribution. The successful candidate will help develop and execute plans to check significant policy statements by politicians, government officials, business leaders and others in positions of power and authority for their veracity. They will also contribute to experiments around the use of structured data, automation and new storytelling formats to check facts and reach new consumers.
The successful candidate will:
• have superior design and technical skills, experience visualizing information in compelling ways and a track record of conceptualizing and implementing creative digital projects.
• work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
• be conversant in multi-format journalism and the crafting of fact checks and accountability journalism that tells the story in multiple ways to serve AP's wide-ranging set of customers across the globe.
• pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
• have the ability and willingness to work any shift including weekends, and/or as the coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
Qualifications:
The Fact Checks Producer must have a strong interest in fact-based journalism and the industry battle to slow the spread of misinformation. The successful candidate will have advanced individual technical skills, and the ability to work within a team to apply those skills from start to finish on breaking news, short-and long-term projects. This producer will be creative, innovative and agile, with a passion for the intersection of journalism, design and technology, with experience creating graphics and maps, templates, code libraries, widgets and other forms of data-driven storytelling. The successful candidate will have at least three years of full-time experience in digital journalism production at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
Other qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
• Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
• Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.
• History of working with journalists in more than one format is a decided plus.
