Overview:
The position of Editor, Quality, for Hoy San Diego, the Spanish weekly publication within The San Diego Union-Tribune, is responsible for assisting the editorial director in the overall copyediting, editing and packaging of content for the print edition as well as planning, organizing and growing content and social media audience for Hoysd.com, as well as oversight the flow of translations and content from freelance writers. The quality editor also will help with the translation and production of videos for internet.
Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with editorial director to liaise with team members (e.g. writers, reporters and photographers) ensuring deadlines are met
• Write and edit pieces
• Quality control of articles that involves checking for accuracy, write headlines and captions
• Choose supporting material, like images and illustrations
• Follow current events and developments and suggest original ideas
• Use social media and SEO to draw attention to articles in Spanish and in correct English
• Translate articles, videos or any other material
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or media.
• Proven work experience in a newsroom and/or online and/or multiple media editorial work.
• Must have a strong command of both the Spanish and English language, including writing, grammar, spelling, punctuation, proofreading, and journalistic style.
• Experience with publishing tools.
• Adobe Suite product knowledge a plus.
• Thorough understanding of digital journalism is required. This may include social media, techniques of search optimization, feed management or software programs, etc.
• Deep direct knowledge of the Latino culture
• Must be able to exercise judgment in problem-solving, but know when to seek advice or approval. Accuracy and attention to detail is critical.
• Proven ability to judge the urgency of requests and workloads and revise priorities to meet changing demands.
• Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and ability to effectively schedule and manage workload.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Must be proficient in PC computers.
• Must be flexible about processes and learn new software as required.
