Overview:
Editor, El Sentinel
• The El Sentinel editor has responsibility for overseeing the news gathering, audience development and production of El Sentinel and El Sentinel.com. The El Sentinel editor also represents the company at community functions, participates in research and media partnership efforts for the product and keeps Orlando Sentinel Media Group’s SVP of Content & Business Development updated on important developments.
Responsibilities:
• To oversee the gathering of news for El Sentinel and El Sentinel.com
• To make appropriate editorial decisions for each audience – print, desktop and mobile – learning and adapting what content works best for each product.
• To plan and produce El Sentinel newspaper, meeting print deadlines for the weekly publication.
• To work with photos and layout on planning eye-catching, reading appealing presentations.
• To help oversee the production of the Hurricane Guide in Spanish.
• To help El Sentinel identify and use copy from The Orlando Sentinel and to make appropriate stories from El Sentinel available for The Orlando Sentinel and OrlandoSentinel.com.
• To encourage and facilitate sharing content between El Sentinel and its Spanish-language print and online counterparts in South Florida, and when appropriate other tronc counterparts.
• To work with OSC’s business leaders on projects that pertain to the growth and development and the promotion and distribution of El Sentinel.
• To work with the Advertising Department on special editions or online channels that are targeted toward certain advertising and readership themes.
• To work with the Marketing Department in planning community events and partnership deals for El Sentinel and ElSentinel.com
• To represent Orlando Sentinel Communications in journalism efforts involving the Spanish-language community and other Spanish-language media.
• To help prevent any stories or photos from being published, which contain libel or taste problems.
• To develop strategies that reach and engage El Sentinel followers on Social Media.
El Sentinel editor acts within Company policy and applicable federal, state and local legislation to do whatever is necessary to edit and present in a timely manner the most up-to-date and comprehensive news reports of the day.
However, without the approval of the Managing Editor, may not:
• Deviate from or modify company policies
• Deviate from or modify Editorial Department policies
• Commit the company to unbudgeted expenditures
• Hire or fire
• Revise the compensation or status of an employee
• Enter into a relationship with an employee that may have or appear to have an adverse effect upon his/her ability to carry out his/her responsibilities.
Qualifications:
• Should have at least at least a four-year college degree or equivalent related experience.
• Must speak and write Spanish fluently and communicate fluently in English with the English-language publication.
• Knowledge and skill: Must have a full grasp of news events and a keen sense of what makes news.
• Must be an excellent editor of both content and presentation for print and digital media.
• Must have demonstrated experience growing digital audience traffic with content and engagement tactics.
• Must be able to work effectively under deadline pressure to report news on digital platforms and repurpose it for the weekly newspaper.
• Must have experience meeting deadlines and production capabilities and limits.
• Must be able to read and edit text on a video display terminal.
• Typically requires 7-10 years’ experience in news media. That experience should include reporting, news editing, preparing content for the web (including knowledge of SEO and social media), preparing content and pages for the weekly newspaper, and managing a team.
