Summary
Pearson is seeking a superstar Director of User Experience Design (UXD) to join our growing global UX team. We are charged with designing future generation digital learning experiences for students and teachers, and building a world class design organization within Pearson. In this role, you will be a core role player in both of these critical areas of our business.
The Director of User Experience will lead a team of Product Designers, Researchers and UX experts to create simple, compelling, and elegant user experiences across the Pearson Higher Education product portfolio. Our ideal candidate would be a practitioner, mentor, speaker, and a leader for a team of individuals just as passionate about wanting to use design to have a real impact on improving educational experiences.
High Level Responsibilities
• Lead a team of user experience designers to create simple, compelling, and elegant user experiences across the Pearson Higher Education product portfolio.
• Establish a strong pro-active partnership with respective product teams and technology teams to understand and collaborate on driving roadmaps and product/design strategy.
• Manage the demand for and assignment of resources to meet customer commitments, including the use of third parties where appropriate.
• Maintain visibility of deployment portfolio and report project KPIs to the product leadership teams.
• Directing a team of designers in the definition of the user experience of our digital products and online applications.
• Fostering design culture and thought leadership, both locally within the team and globally throughout the company.
Expected Results
The Director of User Experience Design will deliver some or all of the following, as required by the project:
• Contributor to the repository of visual elements and code to help product teams align globally.
• Manage and direct core disciplines within the design team, such as design research and prototyping teams, according to the design strategy of the products assigned.
• Clear metrics, roadmap and progression towards upgraded experience designs.
• Troubleshooting and hands-on support for flagship initiatives.
• Projects delivered to scope, time, budget and quality.
• Scalable deployment models developed.
• Inclusion of technology considerations in proposals.
• KPI reporting.
• Strategic design presentations
Competencies
• Understands the Business of Pearson - Can lead a team of designers to translate specific market opportunity or customer needs and expectations into product design projects. Has a good understanding of financial opportunities associated with design projects of varying scale, and ensures that UX design teams work within parameters of budget and cost relative to market potential.
• Efficacy - Ensures, with minimal guidance, that products design allows for embedding of efficacy requirements. Creates, either directly or through teams, learner experiences which are enhanced by efficacy capability. Leverages efficacy and user data from other Pearson products to strengthen product experience and capability for learners and educators.
• Collaboration - Member of cross-functional product design and development teams. Can be considered a subject matter expert to the team on matters of effective user experience. Leverages inputs and data from other stakeholders to create an engaging and product appropriate user experience, in accordance with market need and does so with minimal guidance. Responsible to Product Category leaders in designing complex products according to spec, ensuring the appropriate consistency in the Pearson user experience across products.
• Learner-Obsessed - Contributes to the design of specific Pearson products with learner needs in mind. Drives research and validation efforts, Leverages data from market research, Segment leaders and other stakeholders to understand learner desires; embeds these inputs into product user experience design directly with minimal guidance.
• Digital Change Maker - Incorporates cutting-edge digital capability into Pearson product offerings. Provides support and guidance in user design conception and execution of specific products, to maximize the digital user experience and create appropriate consistency across Pearson products with minimal guidance. Serves as a digital UX subject matter expert to product development and build teams, to ensure the intended digital experience is achieved through the Pearson products before release to the market.
Qualifications
Requirements
• Substantial experience in the delivery and deployment of $multi-million technology across a region or country.
• Solid experience in digital user experience design, preferably across a variety of products including web and native technologies.
• Experience of developing products that are to be used in a wide range of industries and understanding the variances that may be required in UX design.
• International work experience and multi-cultural awareness.
• Experience of software development methods and tools.
• Strong programme/project management skills managing multiple projects, large cross-functional work-streams, $10m+ project budgets, influencing senior level management and key stakeholders within country.
• Strong experience in building relationships and assessing and delivering technology to local requirements.
• Strong experience in system integrations.
• Highly organised, focused and driven with a track record in the delivery of projects to time, in scope and to budget.
• Extensive experience in estimating and planning from a commercial perspective with external customers and sales teams.
• Strong time and quality management skills as well as previous experience in the management and resourcing of teams.
• Experience in status reporting to senior leadership including risk and issue management and escalation.
• Management of a budget, third parties and resources.
• Fluent in written and spoken English.
