Job Duties
The Associate Editor will be joining the Academic Journals team, a part of the Springer Research Group. Reporting to the Senior Editor, the Associate Editor will be responsible for journal management, in coordination with external editors and society partners. Specific responsibilities include:
• Know the terms of the publishing contract and ensure that Springer Nature is fulfilling contractual obligations.
• Alongside external editors and society partners, develop the content of 15 life science and biomedicine journals. This includes providing advice on scope, citation, online downloads and new article types.
• Identify articles that are suitable for press releases/news items/Highlights, and inform the relevant parties.
• Identify topics that are suitable for editorially-led print and online supplements and focuses.
• Actively acquires content for journals with an annual increase determined by management.
• Develops yearly Journal Improvement Plans to address pending issues and manage journal expectations and monitor and analyse usage data on a quarterly basis.
• Holds at least one editorial board meeting per year to discuss journal status and evaluate content requirements.
• Develops and maintains international Editorial Boards.
• Keeps JFlow (internal database workflow system) and Springer.com accurate and up-to-date adding information as needed.
• Sends invitations and author guidelines to Editors-in-Chief, Section Editors, and Authors. Works with Production to ensure all required forms are signed, completed, and returned by Authors.
• Works with Editor-in-Chief to secure late manuscripts, or when a manuscript cannot be procured, work with Editor-in-Chief to develop alternate plans for completing an issue per journal plan.
• Researches journal field to determine if content change is necessary to keep the journal current and monitor closely competing titles.
• Researches and discusses new projects with editorial colleagues particularly in overlapping areas.
• Ensure all ethical standards are adhered to and supported.
• Identify opportunities for new revenue streams/third-party deals.
• Support Senior Editor as required.
• Any other duties as required by the manager.
Job Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree (preferably in a STEM subject).
• 4+ years' relevant scholarly journals management experience.
• Must be proficient in MS Word and Excel.
• Demonstrate strong communication skills, organization and attention to detail. Meeting deadlines is critical.
• Have good oral and written presentation skills.
• Be obsessively customer-centric.
• Have the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
• Be enthusiastic and committed.
• Able to manage several projects at once and set/reset priorities as necessary.
• Approximately 10% travel is required.
